Do all dorm rooms provide high speed internet access? Or only in the newer dorms?

and is there wireless and where?

I can answer wireless...

Everywhere on campus (so says Air Bear) and certain res halls that have posted signs.

http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/

For wireless and other info...I'm looking for my answer there...though Cal students who have experience with computers at Cal, please answer.

Gemini: Here is a map of locations on campus for wireless:

http://airbears.berkeley.edu/map/

When you get here you are required to register your computer to the network so that they can track your bandwidth. They limit your bandwidth to about 5 GB a week, but there are simple ways around it.

yeah, simple ways, ummm our internet is T3 if i'm not wrong, 5 Mb/sec tops

Is that a lot of bandwidth? I won't be downloading music too often and I just need to go on for research, IM, and e-mail. And also to send pictures and download pictures from friends.

A full-length movie (legally or illegally downloaded) is typically around 1 gb. So for 5 GB you can get 5 movies a week.

A full mp3 song is typically around 5 mb. So for 5 gb, you can get around 1000 (1024, if you want to get picky) songs.

A decent picture hits around 1 mb...you can see where this is going. Unless you feel like downloading all three LOTR movies in one week, you shouldn't have a problem.

Are you required to register a MAC address or something for wireless connectivity? Or will I be able to use wireless internet in the event that I got over my allotted bandwidth?

Also, FinalGear007, what are the "simple ways" that you use to evade the cap?

thanks eiffelguy :)

you do not have to register a mac address for your wireless card

also, the entire berkeley network has a capacity of 60 megabits / second

its fast, even during peak usage, but youre limited to 5gb/week OUTSIDE of the network. people here use dc++ berkeley hub to keep sharing files IN network to save bandwidth

In response to not needing a MAC for the wireless network, does this mean I can just connect to the network inside my dorm(because some floors in the Units seem to have wireless) and use that connection for any outside file sharing since I won't be trackable?

Also, I was thinking that a dc++ hub would be able to provide me with most of what I need, but then I read this on the resnet faq(http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/benice/bandwidth/faq/):
Yes, the 5GB per week limit on bandwidth usage includes all traffic to and from your computer.
This seems to contradict what hwft is saying; which one is right? Is intra-network bandwidth included in the cap?

DC++ is not counted against your bandwidth because its intra-network.....hehehehe..........i definitly dl more than 5 gigs a week......

i'm not sure if wireless counts against your bandwidth- i dont think it does, but im not sure. the thing is, its 802.11B and its pretty slow for file transfers- a top speed of aroudn 60KBps

so is there anyway to download more than 5GB from outside? such as bittorrent

"5gb/week OUTSIDE of the network"

thats sucks, I do 30gb/day sometimes.

"thats sucks, I do 30gb/day sometimes."

...how the heck do you pull that off?! I never did anything that bad when I was in the dorms and I abused the living @%!! out of that T3 line.

Oh, and not to worry about going over the bandwith, you get like 3 warnings before they cut you off. Actually, they cut you off after the second and you have to take a courtesy quiz, then reconnect you. My advice is if you are gonna go over your bandwith the first time -- DOWNLOAD all the crap you want, and half the crap you don't want, and about a quarter of the crap you'd figure everyone else would want. They can't touch you. It's quite funny really, of course, unless they changed policies since I lived in the dorms.

Figured I'd add an urban legend I heard from a ResComp when I lived in CKC:

"Someone transfered a Terabyte (1000 Gigs) in a week, most of it was porn."

I live on campus and we get FAST@$$ internet access. You can download at like 2 MB/sec from websites (ASSUMING SERVERS ARE FAST ENOUGH).

As for the limit? So what. If you want movies you can DC++ onto the Cal network. Internal network transfers don't cost you out of your 5 GB/week. Thus you can do unlimited transfers. I've gone over once and it was 5.02. I never got my internet shut down yet. Plus if you're smart enough you know how to workaround the bandwidth limit. Yes I can use 30GB a week if I wanted to AND NOT GET SHUT DOWN.

"so is there anyway to download more than 5GB from outside? such as bittorrent"

not really
