Hinton James dorm accessories

Any suggestions from folks who may have lived in Hinton James...as to...you will definitely
want to have to make the dorm room more liveable? Special closet organizers? Desk stuff? Wall stuff? Storage containers? etc?

And is a 4.4 cu ft mini fridge an ok size?

Anything you can do to make those tiny, cinderblock rooms look more like bedrooms is worth it! My roommate and I had a bright curtain, bright bedspreads, posters, desk lamps, an octopus lamp, postcards, everything… We also bunked the beds so we could have room for two extra comfy chairs. Our room looked like a Pottery Barn catalogue. Unfortunately our room overlooked the stairwell (ha) so we never felt like we could have the curtain up without people gaping in. It was like living in a cave, but at least it was a pretty cave! ; ) And I think your fridge will be fine.

awayfromitall, they post the regulations for dorm fridges on UNC housing’s website, so you can check. I actually had a bigger-than-regulation fridge in the dorm for 3 years and nobody seemed to care.

I agree with jambaby that wall decorations are key. The walls are pretty ugly so anything you can do to hide them is key. I’ve seen a lot of people hang large sheets/tapestries on the walls, which actually is quite pretty. That or a lot of posters. I would also bring lights to string and/or octopus lamps because the corners can be kind of dark. Also, bring a futon or a saucier chair, because you’ll need extra seating when friends come over.

In terms of organizing, long under-the-bed containers with wheels on them work really well. I absolutely loved mine. You can get those from Wal-Mart for a few dollars. And last I checked they had taken all of the doors off of the closets, so if you want to keep your closet private I would recommend bringing a shower curtain rod and some sort of curtain to hang from it.
