Hippies at Bowdoin?

Okay, some people have said that the northernmost schools are “part hippy, part preppy.” Does this mean there are both a significant number of hippies, and a significant number of preppy people at Bowdoin? Does that mean that there are a significant number of people at Bowdoin who are some combination of these things? Would I have any trouble making a circle of “very liberal” friends at Bowdoin?

I'm "very liberal" and I'm going to Bowdoin...I'll be your friend. Honestly, I don't think you'll have a difficult time making friends.

Does anyone have any idea what % of students at Bowdoin are Jewish

About 10% according to the Hillel site:

<a href="http://www.hillel.org/hillel/Hillel_Schools_New.nsf/44257994e40bf4e7852567ec00500a7d/8e94853351a7c9e085256e6a006f803a?OpenDocument%5B/url%5D">http://www.hillel.org/hillel/Hillel_Schools_New.nsf/44257994e40bf4e7852567ec00500a7d/8e94853351a7c9e085256e6a006f803a?OpenDocument</a></p>

No, there are plenty of very liberal people. If you're talking about being politically liberal, there are certainly political groups on campus that you can get involved in where you can make friends. And I know it might be terribly shocking to some of you, but there are actually some kids that went to prep schools that might even be labeled "preppy" that lean liberal and could possibly be worth spending your time with. Stereotypes like that, especially for a college so small, really don't convey very much about the school. The title of the post "hippies at Bowdoin"--are you looking for them? To start (and to find the "very liberal, too I guess), I dunno, check the outing club, the co-opers, the organic gardening club, the college democrats, the democratic socialists, the peace groups, the BQSA, etc.

And as far as the jewish question goes, there is an active Hillel...thing...(organization? I'm not jewish, I'm not really sure what you call it, but I know a lot of people who are so I know it does exist). I'm not sure of the percentage of students though, sorry.

I'd be willing to field questions about either group.

Oliver, I'm really interested in joining the Bowdoin College Democrats...what do you guys do exactly? How big is the club? And most importantly, do you think that Al Franken will be coming back to speak in the near future?

We do a lot of different types of things, from campaign work to GOTV to registering students to vote (all important things in the months before November 7, 2006) But we also host events and speakers to educate the campus. We also have some social events.

The club I think has over 400 members on the email list.

And sadly, no, I doubt Al will be back anytime soon.
