Hispanic and Native American

Hi guys,

So my mom is 100% Taino from Puerto Rico and my father is half Puerto Rican and half Spaniard. I know on an application, I would claim this as Hispanic and Native American. However, I am not registered with a tribe. I would feel bad about the boost I would get from being a URM, but what about legacies, athletes, and rich kids? We all need a leg up right? So, does it look bad if you claim your Native American but not registered with a tribe? Does Penn even ask for documentation? I know Cornell does not. Thank you! And for those of you wondering, I am actually interested in my Native American ancestry. I have been researching them for some time now.

I’m not positive, but I think you need to be a card carrying tribe member to be considered Native American. Try posting this on the College Admissions forum for better answers (I don’t really know why you posted this in Penn '16).

i do not think Taino is native american since this is indians from the caribean and not territorial us.
