History 1c

i signed up for this class. incoming freshmen. how is it? i heard from one other person that its hard. any other opinions? the teacher that is currently listed is "the staff".
comments?

thanks in advance!

the two teachers who usually teach history 1c are terrible (urdank and frank). i'd say 75% chance it's one of those two. both are really boring and not that easy, but not impossible either. i took it under urdank and would have hated the class except i had a great TA. so it all depends on your TA. i would still take the classl, the material is mostly AP memorization .

did you get an A?

yeah i did, though history is my major and interest

the course material is really broad and goes from 1700 to 1989, in europe.

any tips on how to achieve that A? go to office hours? are TAs a big help? should i study old exams?
thanks!

there most likely won't be old exams. don't even bother wtih the professors, especially if they're urdank or frank. get to know your TA VERY well and go to his/her office hours a lot. but dont be annoying either. they decide your grade, and can "bump" you up a little in their heads if they like you.

oh dang. do all TAs have the power to do this? are the TAs the graders have exams and such?

in all classes where you have a TA, they will be the ones deciding your grade

in history/other north campus classes they have even more power. a south campus TA will just add your points form an exam together and follow a rubric. a north campus TA subjectively reads an essay and somewaht randomly assigns a grade. an A essay to one TA may be a B to another.

oh i see. thanks!

This is in response to Urdank and Frank as professors, it should be noted that I had them both for upper-division work.

Urdank I found to be very dry, however willing to help in his office hours. His area is European History (I had him for the history of Britain), so I would actually say go with him for this class.

I had Frank for Imperial Russian history. I actually liked Frank, however for what it's worth, he was, in my opinion, one of the harder history professors I had while at UCLA.

While I thought both were actually decent professors, I would say go with Urdank if you're looking for something a bit easier, however be prepared from him to be dry. If you don't mind the challange, go with Frank, he'll be less boring.

Just remember though I had both these professors for Upper Division classes, and I was a History major.

Good Luck

thanks!
