I am most likely going to transfer from UCLA to USC. I am a history major. I am wondering how good the USC's history program is?

As far as I know its pretty decent but I don't know if its any better than UCLA (at least not significantly, thats for sure), although USC rocks so you should totally come here anyways. What kind of history do you want to study? Why do you want to leave UCLA?

It's threads like these that make me happy! UCLA students crossing town =) . Good choice! Fight On!

I don't know much about both departments, but my feeling is UCLA's history department should be better. It is no surprise these LAS majors are the weakness of USC.

But on individual case, USC may be a good choice for you. There are many excellent students choosing USC to study science, liberal arts, etc. They look for better teaching, more resource, and know what they want from their education. Since you are thinking about transferring, you must've known more about career goal. Just go talk to the department, see what they can offer you, and if and how that match up with UCLA's. Since you already gone through the admission process, you can act like a veteran.

Good luck!

Why are so you eager to leave UCLA? Before you decide to transfer, ask yourself if it is really worth it. What problems do you have with UCLA? Second, USC may be a great place, but if your interested in the quality of history departments, then I suggest that you stay in UCLA, whose department is ranked #6 by the National Research Council (this was in the early 1990s). On the other hand, if you prefer smaller classes and more individual attention from the professors, then USC is probably a better choice. Your pick.

I've talked to several history majors at USC and asked them about the quality of the department. They all say that there are good professors and there are not so good professors. The College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences as a whole isn't as noteworthy as some of the other schools at USC, but I'm sure you will find the history department of at least decent quality. But generally, I believe the classes will be smaller (many majors in CLAS are small), and you will have many resources at hand. Try contacting the undergraduate advisor or somebody in the history department (http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/history/).

Early 1990s is a long time ago considering how much USC and UCLA have changed in that amount of time. I don't know how accurate that would be now.

AZman,
I want to transfer because I feel I am getting nowhere at UCLA. I can go for hours, but just straight and simple, I am sick of UCLA's large classes and no attention.

Protokurios,
I am curious. What is your major? Can you clarify what you mean by not so good professors?

ALL schools have some great instructors & others who are less than wonderful. Because USC is a private school, it tends to be more accommodating of student needs than UCs, allowing students to change majors, dual major, etc. USC may also have more of a "campus feel," since so many students live on or near campus--there always seems to be activities on campus to draw the students together; my understanding (from speaking to students who attended UCLA) is that UCLA has a much higher % of commuters & doesn't have that cohesiveness that comes with a school that has many of its students living on or near campus.
