I am interested in a History major and I know that you can major in History at Annapolis, but if you are applying for a NROTC scholarship selection is determined also according with what you would like your major to be. Is there any chance of getting a NROTC scholarship (Marine Option) by selecting a history major, or should I just try for another major. Thank you in advance for all of the help.

One of my closest friends at the UW unit is an MO and he's a history major. Most of the Marine Options seem to be non-technical majors, and as far as I know, the Corps is OK with that.

Like everything else, just be honest about it. Don't tell them you want Aero E. when you really want to do History. If you change your mind before showing up to the school, it's not a problem, just don't go into with the intent to deceive.

Just so you know, my USNA roomie was a History major and he ended up going Navy Pilot (CH-53E Helo pilot by choice).

Get good grades and all sorts of options are available to you. STUDY!

" **Technical majors. HUGE point getter as long as you do well in math/science and they are under the quality of APs/IBs (or whatever is highest offered at your school ----MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR COUNSELOR INCLUDE "Completed highest offered math course, etc" IN HIS/HER STATEMENT)."

see this thread for excellent information about NROTC scholarships:

Is there a website with a list of technical degrees anywhere?

First, you need to narrow down the college you want to attend based on possible majors. Clearly, NROTC gives extra points for technical majors, but that doesn't exclude non-technical majors. Case in point, my daughter received a four-year NROTC scholarship to UC Berkeley with the intent of majoring in history or political science.

My S was totally undecided about what he wanted to major in when applying for the NROTC scholarship. He asked his recruituiting officer for advice and was told to just put down a class he really enjoyed in h.s. S put Physics.

He ended up applying to the the engineering school at his univ. and was accepted to it but in spring of senior year (hs) decided against engineering and changed his major.

S (a rising jr.) says that most midshipmen in his unit who started out in engineering have switched to something less technical because it was killing their gpa.

history teachers, and others who love history will find this amazing new virtual history of Rome from the University of Virginia and UCLA quite fascinating:
