I am looking for the schools with the best history programs. I am especially interested in modern/20th century history and U.S. history. I plan to become a sports writer and I feel history is something I find interesting and it will prepare me for this career. Also to go with it I will probably try to minor in journalism. What school is good for my interests and this combination? Also just out of curiosity, what kind of internships/careers could history lead to in case I change my mind with journalism?

anyone please?

Well without any sort of personal statistics or anything, people can just point you towards ivies and near ivies and call it a day.

UNC is known for both its history and journalism programs.

Their topflight athletics would certainly appeal to an aspiring sports writer as well

You don't need a journalism program. You want a top flight history program on a campus with a major campus newspaper. On my campus, we have no journalism major but we have a ton of ex Daily Bruin writers who are now journalists and they come from all majors.

Rather than giving me another rankings list or ivy league school, does anyone actually have experience or a specific school that they feel fits my criteria? Thanks.

UT Austin has history, a large journalism school, a school newspaper and a lot of sports. You could look into the Plan II program which emphasizes writing and liberal arts. When I was in college history majors usually went to law school.

I know Northwestern is know nationally for its journalism program. Don't know how that stacks up for sports writing.

Northwestern has produced several prominent sportswriters -- I know that J.A. Adande and Michael Wilbon (both are ESPN contributors) are Northwestern alums.

To add on to the case for UNC, Stuart Scott is a alumnus.

I was a history major at BC and I had amazing professors and there are great internships in the Boston area for journalism.

Actually the rankings do matter, these aren't US NEWS, these are from the National Research Council and they are the ones academics take seriously. But hey I am just a Ph.D. from the place that is ranked #6 in the country what do I know?

I wasn't disrespecting you UCLA. I just wanted information without the constant posting of rankings that I see here way too often. And don't make me into a when you didn't mention what you majored in. How am I supposed to know if you really have a Ph.D. because it's your stupid username on collegeconfidential. Mine could be Harvard, Ph.D. but does that prove anything? No! This is the internet, so don't turn around and disrespect me because you didn't leave a bio of yourself. Do you have anything more you want me to know about yourself? I had an honest request to get better info than what I have already received from everyone here before.

No answer???

Mmhmm. I wonder how many faculty members have retired or been hired since they did that 1993 survey. Dozens? Hundreds? Until the new rankings are released later this year, the National Research Council rankings aren't exactly up to date.

Well, you're not exactly making it easy. You provided no stats and very few preferences. I'm positive there have been several threads on history and sports journalism. Try searching for them; a prospective journalist should have basic research skills.

Haha, I love how we just assume that the OP is ivy-level when no stats are given.

Syracuse has one of the top journalism programs in the country (it may be THE top school for sports journalism), and a good history program as well. Also good sports, although this past year was an off year as far as basketball and football are concerned.
