HKU or HKUST

I applied HKU for IBGM with my IB prediction of 40/42 (3 bonus points pending),

but I just received “unsuccessful”…

Frankly, I cannot understand why I did not make it into the program, for I have always heard

that the cut-line for the admission is around 40/45.

I am still waiting for other two choices, which are BBA and Econ&finance…

I also had an interview with HKUST few days ago for Global Business program.

If I am admitted to both HKU BBA and HKUST Global Business,

where should I go then?

@dohyun- I’m sorry to hear that since your grades are good…40 is the cut-off but that doesn’t guarantee admissions, since I know they look at everything else (ECs, personal statement). :(

@dohyun05: I think u can get hku to reconsider you if you ask your school to send a prediction for your bonus points. I’m guessing that hku rejected you cus they’re not sure what u might get for bonus points. The cut-off for IBGM is 43 i heard. so u have to prove that you’re predicted 3 bonus points. (if you are)

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if there’s anyone out there who has previously applied or is getting ready to apply to a PhD program at HKU or CUHK? I’m from the US - looking into Public Health, Health Economics and Anthropology courses of study. It is tough to find clear statistics/information about what these departments want exactly. I have a 3.8 undergraduate GPA, research and employment experiences, conference presentations and 1 peer review journal publication under my belt. I’m just wondering what my chances are…I’d love to do my PhD in Hong Kong.

@dohyun05: I’m sorry to hear about your unsuccessful application. But do note that academic qualifications is only one part of the whole admission process - and if the program were to admit students based on people who hit the bar, then there would simply be too many people.

HKUST Global Business would certainly have more resources allocated to it than a regular BBA program in HKU. However, HKU’s BBA allow the declaration of unusual majors - if that is, you applied to the generic one. Such includes Business Design Innovation, Wealth Management (and double major in French too) - overall though, personally, I would consider resource allocation to the particular program more important.

@anthrochic - I think HKU is not very good at providing enough information regarding Masters and PHD program. They always expect interested students to contact the respective faculties for more information.

@Chenie0618-> If you haven’t heard from the academic officials from HKU it certainly does not mean that you have been put up on waiting list.Your application status shall be made absolutely clear to you in the forthcoming e-mails so please relax and be positive.:)

Hello Thomas, yes. I am ‘that’ person.

Im stressed out right now, got in HKU and HKUST…
don know where to go now…
HELP!!!

HKU Admissions,

Hi, I and an international student from Taiwan have been accepted to the Econ& Fin program at FBE, but I didnt apply for scholarship. I just paid my deposit so I am certain that I will enroll this September… but is it possible to apply for scholarship now?

37 in IB + 2340 in SAT1 = worth waiting for Global Business?
HKUST contact person has told me that the decision would be out by 31st of March,
and considering that there are only THREE working days left, I just feel exhausted.
I’ve seen dohyun’s post (which dejected me quite further) and was wondering;
if I was not asked for the interview and if the contact person says that the result will be out in 3 days, AM I REJECTED? that simply?

or is there any reason for them to not ask for an interview :(((((

@Mangoaddict- Don’t lose faith! ;)

Is there anyone in this forum who will enroll in HKU engineering this september?

No news is good news- keep up the faith, MangoAddict!!

I was admitted for Global Business early this month. I’d go for HKUST over HKU because its campus is just so much more beautiful, spacious, and green (plus there are beaches/more complete sporting facilities) It’s also not THAT far from town. Depends on where you’re going. There are brand new student living quarters and Business Building going up too. HKU is also excellent in teaching but personally I find the campus slightly claustrophobic.

MangoAddict, I didn’t get an interview and I got into HKU (BSS) so keep the faith! And I find HKU a bit claustrophobic as well but I am going to visit in April to see how I feel about it.

@geezee247 me

wow i didnt know this was true. this guy know alot of things about HK universities and I asked him few questions about engineering few days ago.
this is a quote from a student in HKUST:
“HKU and UST engineering are pretty much the same cept HKU is harder to get into. It is true that HKU has better connections but UST is a relatively new uni and its already made its well into league tables fairly quickly so you shouldn’t let that affect your decision! Besides, an undergraduate degree doesnt really affect career prospectus very much its the masters that matters. Think about other factors - the campus, people, location, culture… btw in HKU, you do general engineering for 1 semester and get to choose in what to do in your SECOND semester of the FIRST year. For, engineering, theres an admission quota of 150 ppl for industrial and civil engineering, around 120 for chem, mechanical and other engineering courses. So industrial and civil is definitely the most competitive, while other ones are a bit easier.”

Hope this information helps for ppl who are going to do eng in HK!!

@puttrani- me too. going next week!

Any questions about HKU engineering (course, admission quota…) fire away! @James1992 I think I wrote that… lol

hey, does anyone know who realistic it is to be accepted when waitlisted for msc comp. science @HKU or otherwise put how close is a waitlist position to a rejection? (maybe someone knows how it was last year and/or the year before…)

Hi there~ I am a student who is taking high school in ontario, and I know the requirement of HKU for Ontario secondary student is I have to have 6 4u or 4m courses to get in, but my problem is i am taking my last two 4u courses right now, and i cannot get my mid semester report until April 20, which means i cannot sent my supporting documents to HKU until i get my report. Would that be too late for admission?

Further to your message I should stress that HKU doesnt admit students to a specific discipline of engineering at HKU. The engineering faculty will make a decision not based on whether you will do civil or mechanical later. As you would know when filling out the application you applied for BEngineering not to a specific discipline!!
