HKU or HKUST

Hello everyone!!

I have 45 minutes left for my Fluid lecture so let me take this out for all those aspiring engineering students coming in to HKU this September.

I am a current Year 2 international student, majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Minoring in Finance. Yes I know its a weird combo but it works in HK!!

I can talk about my experiences in HKU engineering. Well first of all. Its hard to get in. But its harder to stay in. If you are not tough enough to “work hard and play hard” (HKU’s motto), then I suggest you look at a school… that well is not in Hong Kong.

We have 3 Engineering buildings with numerous labs. (No I haven’t counted the labs yet). We get to do a lot of practical work. But what diffrentiates HKU engineering is the projects that students can work under.

Last year I was working in the Redbull Flugtag Competition as a part of a project our class took up. It was not regular course work but just an extracurricular activity. We had to make a glider that could travel the longest possible distance. Just check out the videos on YouTube.

For our civil engineering students we have many projects being undertaken in China to help the poor and the needy people over there. Mingde project was one where we had to rebuild a rundown school. Students get to go to China to work on these projects.

Anyways… about the faculty. Well we have one of the top faculty but most of the Professors would be Chinese. However for the business faculty, the Professors are really awesome. I can tell when I compare my engineering and business studies.

HKU has alot exchange opportunities especially for international students. Last year I went to the University of California in Berkeley. It was amazing!!!

HKU also has a diverse international community. Name a country and we would have students from there. We even go the extra step to recruit students from North Korea and Vietnam!!!

I came to HKU with a lot of expectations and I have not been disappointed. Oh yeah about the career part… hmmm… I can say that if you work hard. You can get the best!! International students have gotten offers from JP Morgan, Boeing, Goldman Sachs etc etc!!

Hmmm what else… oh yeah right now I am sitting in Global Lounge. A Heaven for students. A place to chill. Oh n we have a lot of cultural programs coming up this month… Chinese calligraphy anyone???

ONE more inportant point.

2012 will mark the beginning of the Centinniel Campus. For details, go to website!!

In short more room for everyone!!!

But alas!!! I would have graduated :(

matchaaddict

I am afraid the deadline for scholarship is over.

However the faculty does offer some scholarships based on your performance and GPA in HKU.

Hey HKUAdmissions, do you know when approximately HKU will make a decision upon my application? I’m an IB international applicant from Canada with a predicted grade of 38. I applied for economics and finance as the first choice on dec 19th and my status is still under consideration. I’ve heard rumors that results come march/april. Do you have any updates on that? Thanks!

@HKUAdmissions- could you elaborate on reasons the professors are awesome? Are they recruited from abroad?

@Jy93: no worries! My friend got an offer from E&F with the same IB prediction as you :)

Hi, Im from Canada. I was notified that Im “under consideration” for all HK universities…=(
I did apply for early decision for all of them, and my marks are (pretty/very) high, along with all other qualifications (volunteer, toefl, reference letters, awards, etc.)
I never thought that it would be so difficult and competitive! ( I guess the programs are too popular)
Im not sure what to feel or think right now…would I need to wait until summer? OMG…

what did you apply to?

Question about HKU: Are all of the university’s programs accredited?

@HKUAdmin.

hi, Im a student whos in the final year of secondary school. I’ve got my offer from HKU and HKUST, but haven’t decided yet which one to go to.
From one of ur posts, u mentioned that I have to choose the course after I get into the university. So my offer is general engineering for HKU?? What if I decide to do something different from what I applied for? In my application, I specifically mentioned the course that I wanted to take. I don get how it works… help me. lol

AHHH! I’m still waiting to hear from HKUST (and CUHK). I heard that HKUST will release international students decisions BY the end of March… which is tomorrow. I’m a bit worried now since my status still says “under consideration”… AHHH!

…I applied for Quantitative Finance btw.

Hi everyone,

I just want to know the acceptance rate of GBUS for international students.

I see some replies saying IBGM’s acceptance rate is almost 1% for international students.

Anyone knows about HKUST’s Global Business?

I want to know the approximate acceptance rate and average SAT score if possible.

I really want to get into GBUS…

Thx!!

im waitlisted for GBus in HKUST… ok that proved that my IB sucked.

is there any international student who got into his second choice of major at HKUST today? i’m confused if i am waitlisted for all three choices or just the first one. if the former is right i am ready to explodeee

Hi guys, I have applied to HKUST during late January for BBA (normal BBA). (Intl Student). Do any of you guys know about when my offers going to come out?
Thank you

Hey. I got an email from a lady named Olivia Kong today. She said I’ve been waitlisted and would be informed between April and June should I be admitted. My choices are:

BBA in Global Business

BSc in Economics and Finance

BBA in Finance

What exactly does that mean? I don’t even feel like emailing them since they reply after ages.

hi guys, is there any form for the academic referee to fill in for HKUST? It seems that they only want my referee’s contact details only. why is this so?

Just got waitlisted for all 3 programs at HKUST… the anxiety continues :(

@vrhora : i got the exactly same email from ms olivia kong… what kind of score do you hold? like SAT or IB

I have 9As in O levels. 4As in AS level. I dropped a subject and went ahead with 3 A levels. I got 2060 in SAT. You?
