HL Math Question

Hello all,

I am currently in Calc AB. How hard would HL math be or how much of a learning curve is there? I would choose to take either SL or HL in my senior year and I am currently a junior. Thanks!

What is sl or hl?

Standard Level and Higher Level

I honestly don’t know how your school does it but in my school IB Math HL is split up into two years.
The first year of IB Math HL is the equivalent to AP Calculus BC. The second year of IB Math HL is math that further extends the math you’ve learned (multivariable calculus, matrix algebra, etc.). If IB Math HL were to be crammed into one year in your school, then it’s really up to you. If you want a real challenge and are going to commit, then take the IB course, else just take AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics.
Just my advice~
Hope this helped~!

Thank you @yunallen ! I am currently taking Calc AB and AP Stats. Would this be sufficient for a course like HL Math? Or would prep over the summer help, and what type of prep?

This is only if your school crams two years of Math HL into one:
IB Math HL has AP Statistics in one of their units so taking AP Statistics in advance can really help you out if you plan on taking HL. Taking Calc AB helps prepare you for the Calc BC part of HL. The rest of the units are up to your commitment. It’s definitely doable. As for prep, since you’re taking IB you won’t be able to find really famous prep books like Princeton Review or Barron’s (although you might want to buy Princeton Review’s BC book since you’ll probably be taking that test next year anyways). For me, the only prep I needed was asking the teacher whenever I didn’t understand something after class or after school (TRUST ME it helps). *Try doing something else during the summer and not just go to tutor and stuff. You probably are though :stuck_out_tongue: ^.^
Hope I helped~

Thanks a ton @yunallen
