What does cooper union look for in a applicant?

Depends on your major.

I want to go into its Engineering program.

I’m a sophomore, rising junior

Here are my current stats:
SAT: 2000 (projected to be around 2200 by end of summer)
AP: Haven’t taken any, but next year I’m taking AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Lang, AP Calc AB, APUSH
GPA: 3.83 (uw) 4.38 (w)
Rank: 9th out of 395
EC’s: Green Club (Treasurer), French Club, Photography Club, Academic Decathlon (Next year, added to that will be: German Club, Calculus Club, NHS, and Anytown), I also tutor people in math
Awards: I got 3rd on super quiz (team award), won second place in a HOBY Leadership Essay

Currently standing, what are my chances to go to Cooper Union? I know almost half of it is in the future… But I just don’t want to get my hopes up for no reason?

What major are you applying to? This is something that makes a huge difference. The chemical and mechanical engineering programs aren’t as selective as the electrical engineering program.

SAT score isn’t as important as GPA. And courseload doesn’t count for much at Cooper (plenty of my friends have taken only 1-3 APs)–don’t overwork yourself when you’re still young. Save the energy for college.
Instead of taking Calc AB, take BC in your junior or senior year. In your senior year, think about taking AP Physics C (both exams) as well as AP Euro. If you take BC and get a 5, you can place out of Calc I. If you get a 5 on AP Chem, you can place out of Gen Chem. If you get a 5 on AP Euro and get permission from the Humanities department, you can place out of HSS 3. If you get a 5 on both Physics C exams, you can take the physics placement exam, and maybe place out of Mechanics and E&M (a very, very, very small handful of people place out per year).

You have a pretty good chance of getting in, but maybe try to do some more science-related extracurriculars like research, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, etc. Sophomore year is a great time to start a research project.

I plan on attending a internship my junior-senior year (because you have to be above a certain age group… And I’m one of those late kids). I’ll be taking Calc BC senior year. My school doesn’t offer EITHER AP Physics or AP Euro (though I might self study that).

But I probably won’t be attending most science-related extracurriculars because I have AP to study and SAT to memorize. So will it really destroy my chances? I wanted to apply for the chemical engineering

If you stalk my profile, you can find my chance threads and you will see that I was accepted with not so impressive stats. Then again, I’m going to be a civil e major… XD

It won’t hurt you very much. Do try to apply early decision if you’re 100% serious about applying, though. Some of my ChemE friends at cooper have SAT scores of ~1900, so you shouldn’t stress out about that too much. The SAT isn’t something that needs to be memorized or studied for anyway.
(However, I do have to mention that those people are some of the most intelligent people I know, and are very passionate about what they study.)

Again, the rigorousness of your courseload in high school isn’t very important. AP Bio, APUSH, and AP Lang–I don’t think you can get credits for them at Cooper. If you find yourself way to stressed out, I suggest cutting those APs first. Also, I feel as if taking Calc AB and then BC is a little useless, because BC is only an extra month worth of material (unless you’re self studying BC).
You don’t have to take AP Physics C, but you should at least know the course material. Mechanics and E&M are some of the toughest classes you’ll take at Cooper–unless you know the material beforehand or are ready to dedicate 10+ hours a week to the class, you will not be prepared.

As long as you keep up your GPA, you’ll be fine. I believe you have a fairly good chance of getting into Cooper.

Is the internship STEM related? It would be a plus if you had an engineering or chemistry internship in high school. However, it’s pretty hard to find an internship in high school (in college, you basically can only find internships starting sophomore year, because they only want sophomores, juniors, and seniors). You’re better off doing some sort of research project, getting into local science fairs (for example, NYCSEF if you’re from New York), Intel, Siemens…

Congrats YuhikoJay! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it here.
Cooper students always talk about the civil engineering program as if the students were less smart, but that’s completely untrue. I find that civEs are usually the ones who try their hardest at cooper, and most civEs did research in high school. I wouldn’t be surprised if it were more competitive than chemical or mechanical.

Um. Well it was actually for biomedical engineering.

But is there anything else I can do to raise my chances even more? Cooper Union only have a 8% acceptance rate!

AND OMG YUHIKOJAY, YOU HAVE MEDICORE STATS? YOU HAVE THE MOST AMAZING SAT SCORE. I’M JEALOUSSSSS!

Wow… You are brilliant…

Hehe thanks XD… I met an EE girl attending CU over the weekend and she had just AMAZING stats… and she claimed she was only slightly above average so I was like oh wow ><

I have yet to visit campus (I have never been to a state other than CA and Nevada for Las Vegas lol) but I am so sure I will love it! I have always been at large schools (2600ish kids in elementary school, 3500 for middle school 2700 for high school) and I really want to be at a small school now! It will be easier for me to get to know the professors, and to make friends I just worry about not being able to handle the coursework XD

Thanks CooperStudent yeah I’ve heard stories about that and I got semi depressed, but thank you for the words of encouragement :D

And the 8% is an average. It’s ~3% for the architecture college, ~5% for art, and ~ 17% for engineering and don’t ask me why I know :P

I think the supplement was pretty important? I think I did a pretty good job on it :)

So basically I need to raise my SAT score to a 2200, take SAT Math & Chem, and my chances are raised significantly.

Yes! Or math and physics. For math, preferably take math 2. Good luck :)

A biomedical engineering internship would be great too. You don’t really need a 2200, to be completely honest, but it would help. The average SAT score for engineers is probably about 2100.

AHHHH!!! I so HOPE I can make it in. I’m absolutely IN LOVE WITH NYC!

And cooper union. That school has the coolest building I’ve seen…

:P

It’s funny that you mention that… Everyone complains about Cooper’s New Academic Building! They say that it’s poorly designed, that the elevators suck, that the stairs are useless, that there are no stairs connecting the 6th and 7th floors… But it’s really beautiful. I have never seen anything like it before. One of the first rooms you should explore when you’re at Cooper is the conference room on the 8th floor–it has a great view. Personally, I love the building and I couldn’t have asked for a better one.

I hope you get in! Good luck!!

I’ve never been in the inside. But the exterior is really neat!

I have a 2220 superscore right now but if I somehow manage to not make a million idiotic mistakes on the retake I will probably get it to ~2300. And I’ll probably get 750+ on the math sat ii and 800 on the physics one.

However, my GPA for freshman and sophomore year is horrendous (94 weighted no idea about UW but it’s probably around an 85). But this year as a junior I’ll have an unweighted average of ~96 and the only difference is that I started doing my homework and studying on the rare occasion that I need to.

Next year I’m taking AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Macro/Micro, Honors precalc, and all my other classes are advanced. I plan to start applying myself next year and finish high school strong.

I will be applying ED to cooper, as it is my dream school and uncontested #1 choice. I see on collegeboard that demonstrated interest is “very important” so hopefully applying ED will make a strong enough statement.

Can anybody give me input on whether or not I stand a chance at being admitted into Cooper’s MechE program? I would really appreciate it.

I think you’ll make it. I honestly do
The rising trend in grades is really good. And also APs and honors show that you challenge yourself, which is also good. :)

Around what time do you guys expect the decisions for the Fall 2012 to come out?

My Weighted GPA: 4.39
My Unweighted GPA: 3.5
My SAT: 1980
