Ho to avoid Facebook/Internet distractions/addiction

Even though I don't use my facebook that much, I tend to find things to do and start homework pretty late. usually it's la/ny times articles or random things including facebook. How do you avoid such distractions. Ive thought of changing my passwords to facebook, email, and CC to jwqhdjahdkas writing it down on a piece of paper, putting it in some book at the library then coming back to check up on things once a week. That way I cant check those things at home, Im forced to work! is this a little extreme?

At what time do most people usually start on homework, how often do you check your facebook/email?

I have the same problem you do. It amazes me how I can click on FB and not even notice. It has become so natural.

I have the same problem, I liked panchovilla’s advice about FB password, I will try to use that.

Other ways to to avoid FB addiction

That’s kind of extreme. It’s not so bad to start homework late as long as you finish.

I start homework an hour after I wake-up and stop an hour before I go to bed. Sometimes I take breaks and go to class, the gym, the market, the bathroom, etc.

I blocked Facebook from all my browsers. It may seem a little extreme, but I stopped using it after that. I can still see when people post on my wall (email notification) and I’ll just call them, talk to them tomorrow, or go on a different computer to post back.

Checking Facebook used to take up to three hours, but now it takes less than ten seconds a week. It’s really completely unnecessary.

If you’re getting distracted by fb and anything else, then you’re not in the mindset to work. Changing passwords, etc isn’t going to help everyone unless you do what fairy did, which is a bit extreme. And unless you’re secluded, you’re going to find some ways to distract yourself if you don’t want to work at the moment.
The plan is to balance the distractions and the work. Set a distraction/napping time limit (~30 minutes) for every hour of studying and convince yourself that you need to work (think of your grade, perhaps freeing up the weekend, more distraction time in the future, etc). The main thing is to just focus on working; when I try to force myself to work, I find that I get annoyed easily and just zooming through work/studying without actually learning the material.

If you walk around the main stacks at night, it always seems like half of the people in the library are browsing facebook. You’re absolutely not alone in this.

If you find the Internet distracting, make yourself go without a laptop.

It’s impossible unless you block it…we all know it. There’s also this site where I read about people who wonder how to stop being addicted to the Internet and Facebook - pretty addicting in itself.

I spread my homework throughout the day/week because I get distracted easily. If you’re cramming hw or studying and get distracted, you should think about changing your time management beforehand and not just the day before.

Wow. Just make a schedule for yourself that says “I will get this done by this time on this day,” and stick to it.

If you have things done ahead of time you can browse facebook all you want.

^ that’s what i do. i make a to-do list for each day, and i can’t procrastinate until i’ve done all those things. works like a charm.

You can always browse Facebook on a smartphone. That’s what I started doing and it always turns out even more time consuming than browsing on the computer because I type slowly on the phone’s virtual keypad.

Also, doesn’t it just take several seconds to unblock Facebook?

surround yourself with people who are hard at work i.e. study lounges. that motivates me to work

If there was an easy and effective way to focus, everyone would know about it. There isn’t. There is no substitute for good old-fashion discipline.
