Hofstra Class of 2014

So this is our thread. So what are you majoring? Which dorm do you prefer? Where are you from? The basics ;)

Just found out I was accepted and prolly attending, I was also wondering what some peoples views on dorms where? Im majoring in Biology, Im 21 years old from Connecticut…Transfer student and all that… I need out of Connecticut…now. Is it fall yet…

Well I dont know much about dorms and all that, from what I have heard everybody has their eyes set on the Netherlands. So probably this is the best dorm. I get ya, I am 21 from Bulgaria, and I want to go to Hofstra sooooooooo baaad, infortunately I dont think it is happening for me ;(

The Netherlands are freshman only suite style dorms. The other dorms though are quite large compared to most college dorms and are very nice, as well. I’m not 100% sure I’m going to Hofstra next year, but as of right now it seems likely. I’m from New Hampshire and I will be majoring in music, studying saxophone and voice.

will you be entering as a performance or music education major…and do you know who will be your saxophone teacher?.. my son is 85 percent sure he is going for music ed. but still trying to find out which school Hofstra or Post would be the better for music ed. anyone have any help they could offer…C.W.Post offering close to a full ride Hofstra 16k

Im entering as a freshman of the class of 2014. I’m a commuter and plan to major in either history or poly sci with a possible minor in global studies.

@gramie1, i’m from L.I. and am quite familiar with C.W. Post(I also practically got a full ride), and would definately consider it as a viable school if your son desires to be a music major. My knowledge stems from the fact that my band teacher(who is a highly qualified musician that often performs on broadway among other venues) is an adjunct prof. at Post. He praised Post’s band and music dept., and advised me to attend if I chose to continue with my instrument. On the other hand, I personally know a current freshman at Hofstra that is majoring in music, and is interested in music production etc…, a field that Hofstra is noteworthy for. If money is an issue, then Post is your school, but if not, I would opt for Hofstra(as I did), an institution that is full of opportunities(internships, clubs, connections) and that offers many more classes than Post(if your son decides not to make a career out of music). Plus Hofstra is a household name that may loom larger than Post(not that Post is a bad school, its good too, its campus is breathtaking) on a job application.

Is Hofstra a difficult school to get into? I am considering it yet I have a pretty low GPA w/ good extracurriculars & a good SAT score. Anyone considering to give me some insight?

post your stats

@bkim2011. Hofstra is ranked as a tier 3 school in the us. news and world report, but in my opinion, based solely on the body of programs that it offers, it should be in the top 100. It is undoubtedly the top private school on Long Island, and is a mere 25 miles from Manhatten(i would advise you to take mass transit though, rush hour in the NYC metro area is hell), a place full of oportunites for social and academic growth. It might be a bit expensive at $31,500(w/o room and board), but they do give out merit scholarships, ranging from a few thousand, to about half, to full in rare circumstances. They have about a 50% acceptance rate, thus if your an above average student B+ to A you shouldn’t have a problem getting in. Same with SAT’s/ACTS, above average will get you in without question You can find the exact stats on collegeboard.com. The school is well-known for its communications and drama programs, as journalism and television/media, film production, etc… are popular majors within the school of Communications. Hofstra has a selective law school and a medical school that is set to be open for the fall of 2011. If the med. school gains an excellent reputation, it will further boost the prestige and perception of Hofstra, and will attract better students. Hofstra is up and coming and its where its at, so I would definately apply, visit the campus, and see if its for you. Good Luck!

@mugwump30 Thank you so much for your advise i will pass this on to my son, i guess he will have to decide soon… deadlines approaching.

Thanks, mugwump. You didn’t mention creative writing in your summary of Hofstra best majors. Do you have any info on that?

@mommybird. Based upon the fact that hofstra has a great drama/acting program, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it has it’s fair share of artsy kids who think outside the box. I think one of my fellow classmates who is also attending Hofstra this fall is planning on majoring in creative writing/literature and English. She is very intelligent, and probably gained admission to a handful of schools where she could pursue creative writng, so her going to Hofstra must mean that there is something special about their program.
