Hofstra's Quality and Just General Questions

Waddup guys! I just have a few questions on the quality of Hofstra's education, student body, and campus.

I live very close to Hofstra University (about 20 minutes away), so it will be very convenient if I attend this college. Currently, I have a 34 ACT, 4.0 GPA (class rank within top 1%, may be the front runner for valedictorian), and several volunteering (many medically related) experiences.

First question.... How is the pre-medical program here? I understand Hofstra has a direct medical program (which I will definitely look into applying to) and a new medical school that is very unique in its teaching techniques. But how is the overall quality of the pre-medical education? I have a very strong Biology and Chemistry background ( 5 on both AP tests and a 800 on SAT 2 Bio M and 770 on SAT 2 Chemistry), so is it possible that that the introductory classes will allow me to gain more knowledge and branch out and think about more complex topics that relate back to the basics?

Also, how are the students here? Is the student body more known for its dedication to its studies or for its parties? I, personally, am dedicated to my studies but will also like to have a little bit of fun, so ideally, a school that balances both studying and fun will be great.

What is the general atmosphere on campus? Are students happy and laid back, or are they constantly stressed?

How are professors and classes at this school, specifically for pre-med courses? Are introductory classes designed to weed students out or are they more designed to develop interest in science?

Any response will be very appreciated!

Hi New YorkHustle,

Thank you for your interest in Hofstra. We are excited that you’re interested in learning more. We can have a current pre-med student contact you so you can get a first hand account of what it is like to be a pre-med student at Hofstra.

Parent of Hofstra freshman here. Hofstra was not my son’s first choice, but it has turned out to be a great school for him. He loves the small classes, his professors, proximity to the city (he comes in frequently), Division 1 sports, and wide range of activities.

So glad to hear that nycst6! We’re happy your son is enjoying his time here at Hofstra. Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Hello there --

A few questions here related to some specific departments, as follows:

(1) How would you describe the undergraduate programs in political science and/or history – strengths/weaknesses, good/bad professors?

(2) How would you describe the “personality” of Hofstra (in whatever way you wish)? Or perhaps to put it another way, what kind of student is likely to be attracted to, and then choose, Hofstra – in contrast with other schools in the NYC area?

(3) What would be the typical demographic of Hofstra students (to the extent that you can answer)?

(4) Why would a prospective student choose Hofstra? Why would a student choose Hofstra over other schools in the NYC area?

Thanks for your consideration.

Hi gandalf78! I can put you in touch with a current political science or history student if you’d like to get their perspective on those programs.

I think my best answer for your questions is that Hofstra really does have the best of both worlds (not to sound cliche!) With our proximity to the city, you’re able to take advantage of all the internship and professional opportunities there while still coming home to a beautiful campus. Your professors will know your name because of our small class sizes, but you’ll also have access to top-notch resources.

Hofstra students are driven and hardworking. There are tons of interesting and diverse student activities to join and there is truly a community for everyone - not to mention being part of the Hofstra Pride as a whole.

Hope this helped out a bit! Best of luck with your college search.

^ Yes, thanks, that would be great; they can send me a responsive PM if that is preferable.

Hi, would you be able to tell me a little bit about either the Education school or the Jewish studies program? I’m asking for my niece. Thank you!

Hi @fretfulmother‌! I’m happy to connect you with a current education major who’s really involved on campus. Please message me an email address at which you’d like to be contacted.

As for the Jewish Studies program, here’s a link to the Department of Religion’s page with contact info for the chair: <a href=“Religion - Home | Hofstra University”>http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/Colleges/HCLAS/REL/

@HofstraRep - thanks!!

@hofstrarep can you connect me with a BME major?

Sure, @safiyyah97. Please message me with an email address at which you prefer to be contacted.

@HofstraRep could you connect me with a health science or biology, preferably pre-PA major?

@HofstraRep I would be grateful to you if you could enlighten me with the excellence of pre-med programs available at Hofstra. Also what are the aids available to International students who wish to apply?
