Senior Looking For Info On Hofstra and Their Pre-Medicine Major

I am going into my senior year and plan to apply early decision to Hofstra University. I am going to major in pre-med and was looking for some insight into their program, how it works, how the classes are and any tips any of you might have about it. Along with pre-med advice, I was hoping any Hofstra Alum or current students could answer a few questions about the school for me! Firstly, from what I’ve seen and heard, Hofstra is pretty quiet, is this true? I’d much prefer a quiet campus with a relaxed atmosphere than a party-oriented school. If I am unable to afford Hofstra and reallllly do not want student debt and was wondering how generous Hofstra is when it comes to financial aid. Hofstra is my number one college choice and I really would love to go there, finances permitting. Lastly, how are the dorms? Is there a large price-gap in a dorm with two rooms and one living area than say one shared room? Thank you for all of the insight ahead of time, and go Pride!

I can’t answer any of your questions-- sorry!

But I do live and work in the area, and can give a little insight into things you didn’t ask.

Hofstra is about a half hour away from midtown Manhattan- any time but this summer. (There’s MAJOR work being done at Penn Station, and this summer has been dubbed “The Summer of Hell” for commuters. But that will be a distant memory by the time you attend.)

It’s about 20 minutes by car from the gorgeous south shore beaches-- take a look at Jones Beach State Park online. https://parks.ny.gov/parks/10/details.aspx and the Jones Beach Theaterhttp://www.jonesbeach.com/ (note: it’s an outdoor theater with a stage set at water’s edge… simply wonderful on a summer night!!!)

It’s 5 minutes by car from Roosevelt Field Mall. http://www.simon.com/mall/roosevelt-field and next door to the new Nassau Colliseum.http://www.nycblive.com/

It’s down the block from the Long Island Marriot http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/nycli-long-island-marriott/?pid=CORPYLP&scid=45f93f1b-bd77-45c9-8dab-83b6a417f6fe though you can absolutely find other, cheaper motels in the area.

Thank you for all this! It makes me excited to see that there is more to do than just study!

A bunch of great kids from my school – maybe a dozen or 15???-- will be starting there in September. Hey re really looking forward to it

Hi, Senior! You sound very motivated! I hope this is not too late and I don’t have answers to all you ask but I want to point out that Pre-Med is not a Major… you can major in any area, philosophy, psychology even music as long as you take the listed pre-med requirements. Many do major in Chem, Bio or other science but medical schools also like humanly well rounded people which add to physician qualities which help in doctor patient relationships which are a part of the healing process. so you can major in any area of your passion. you may have this info b now but as a mother to a son who is applying to college for fall 2018 and also leaning toward pre-med. i wanted to wish you the best!
