Hotels in Berkeley are already booked up for move in day (which I just found out is August 19th). I'm trying to think ahead here -- if I start booking flights home early, if you book for the day before the holiday (for example, the Weds. before Thanksgiving), is that a full day's class schedule, or do people usually just miss classes that day and leave early, or wait until after their last class? Is it also a good idea to start having my parents book well in advance for hotels in Berkeley for days when they'll want to come up and visit?
Thanks for any advice!

No....Ive never booked a flight back home more than 2 weeks before the departure date.....and i highly doubt that every hotel in berkeley is booked....berkeley has A LOTT of hotels....you may not be able to find one thats a block away from campus but you can find one in the area.

Plus, you're parents can always book a room in emeryville, oakland, san francisco, walnut creek, etc. if they cant find a hotel in berk

try the best western on university avenue. on classes, some profes will cancell class on the wed b4 thanksgiving, sometimes you'll decide to skip, sometimes you'll get lucky and have a schedule that gives you a free wednesday, it's all up to how good of a scheduler you are.

i usually book 2 weeks before, because i don't know what's going to happen. plus papers might be due late etc.

I booked Thanksgiving and Winter Break as soon as I knew what my class schedule was; it was worth it to get a good flight time. I stayed for all my classes.
My parents usually stay in Emeryville at a Sheraton or at the Claremont in Berkeley. Or once near the Airport in SF and take the Bart to campus.
Make sure your parents book early for Parents Weekend in October. Hotels sell out very quick, football tickets too.

tickets are much cheaper if you book them well in advance. but it does require planning ahead/trying to finish work on time

^^not really....whether you give them 2 weeks or 2 months, it doesnt make a difference....you just have to give them 2 weeks notice and youre fine

Excellent advice, thanks all! Found out my mom was able to book in the Durant by calling -- she said the website showed it full, lol. So I guess you have to do both.

I looked up the parents weekend thing and was wondering when football tickets are released for sale (single tickets). I heard that frosh get one free ticket to all football games on their Cal1 card. True?

not all of the games. at least this year, the UCLA and stanford games were not included in the free ticket deal.
