Hollingsworth , Townes and Duke scholarships

Hi, does anyone know when departmental scholarships are announced, in particular the Hipp scholarship? Or have recipients already been notified?

Our understanding is that all scholarship announcements were mailed yesterday…?

Is this a change? (I thought Duke went out Monday) Or are you just talking about the departmental scholarships?

Sorry. I meant Monday! It was early in the morning…my brain was still on yesterday’s time! And we were told that they would be notified either way. Still nothing received here.

We received out letter for Hollingsworth today. DS16 was not awarded the scholarship. While we his disappointed, he realized it was a shot. He was told that he will be considered an alternate, but he has taken Furman off of his list.

Sorry to hear he was not selected. We did not get it in the mail today. Is it coming by mail, UPS, or FedEx? Thanks.

Mail. We are instate and close to Furman , so it didn’t take long to arrive.

Our daughter received by mail today that she was awarded one of the departmental scholarships, but we haven’t received any notice regarding the Hollingsworth scholarship. She is also a candidate for the Legacy Merit Scholarship and we haven’t received any notification on that one either.

Good luck @TAMI1993 . Congrats on departmental scholarship. It’s my understanding Hollingsworth is not stackable so I hope you get that one.

@carolinamom2boys: Sorry to hear that your son didn’t get the Hollingsworth. Any luck with Wofford?

@gandalf78 He did receive a fairly generous merit award from Wofford, so it remains on the list. A little background to put things in perspective. This info was given to us on interview day. They received over 1200 scholarship applications, 48 students were invited to interview day. For Hollingsworth there were 25 applicants for 10 awards, there were 4 Townes awards and up to 8 Duke awards.

^ Wow, Furman appears to be blessed with an abundance of talent! I had no idea just how competitive it has been.

@gandalf78 I posted that info not to brag on my son, but so people in the future realize how difficult it is to get large merit scholarships. They offered a generous Belltower scholarship to my son earlier, but with COA about $60,000 a year it still puts. Furman education over $100,000 for 4 years.

@carolinamom2boys Please don’t apologize for giving statistics. My child used the information from the prior year’s posts to try to figure out whether he should apply to Furman. The more information about how many scholarships their were, and who got them, the better for the class of 2017.

@carolinamom2boys: I didn’t take it as bragging – although you have every right to! I was just somewhat surprised at how deep the pool is at Furman in terms of the competitive scholarships.

I think that Furman is off the table for us as well.

I’m beginning to think we are in a postal black hole. Still no word positive or negative.

Sorry @WaitingforMail . Where are you located?

We received our letter yesterday and live less than an hour from Furman. My daughter was not a Hollingsworth recipient, unfortunately. She had already committed to Furman, so along with her departmental scholarship award and the Bell Tower scholarship and her Palmetto Fellows money she has received over half of tuition costs. Still hoping for some outside scholarship awards. All of the interviewees should be proud. Obviously, a great group of successful kids! Best wishes to everyone in their college selections.

Sorry about Hollingsworth, but congrats on the departmental scholarship.

My son received his letter today. We did not receive the Duke. 2240 SAT, first in his class with only two A minuses over four years and 9 APs. Captain of the soccer team - varsity all 4 years. Varsity track all 4 years. Received Echols Scholar at UVA and Monroe Scholar at Wm & Mary – so no complaints. Just would have like a smaller school. Good luck to those still in the running.
