Holy Cross' Exorcism Room

From the college's historian and biographer (Anthony J. Kuzniewski S.J. Fr "K"):

Its location is at the corner where Fenwick and O'Kane meet. From the fourth floor, at the very corner, there is a stairway built against the wall that leads to a locked door, behind which lies the "Exorcism Room." It's visible from the outside of the building as a solitary room that interrupts the continuity at the level of the roof--a large room with many windows.

A number of years ago, when I was using the Internet for research on the College, I came across by accident an episode for the old X-Files television series, written by Jim Riley, who graduated (as I remember) about fifteen years ago from Holy Cross. Called "Fifth Floor," the episode is set in said "exorcism room," and incorporates the personae of a number of Holy Cross people who were here at the time. The plot line begins with three students who get into the room, and while their friends are keeping watch against Public Safety on the fourth floor landing, there is a bright flash of light; and the three students disappear. I won't give away the rest of the story. It was never produced for television.

As I said, I found the story on a site dedicated to X-File episodes, both produced and un-produced. When I re-visited the site a year or two later, it had been transformed into a porn site! So I contacted Jim through the Alumni Office, and he kindly sent me a copy. Students read it with delight and appreciation in the seminar.

There's a description of the "Exorcism Room" in the excellent story Jim Dempsey wrote for the "Myths and Legends" issue of HOLY CROSS magazine (Winter, 2006). College of the Holy Cross | Holy Cross Magazine
