Holy Cross or Providence College

I was not accepted at Boston College (my first choice) so I'm now choosing between Providence College and Holy Cross. Any feedback is appreciated. Also where would be a better place to go if I want to try to transfer into Boston College? Thanks.

holy cross is a much stronger school but providence has a much better location.

Out of curiosity...did you get aid from these schools and if you did how did they compare? PC seems to offer much more in terms of aid since they seem to be interested in building a stronger student base. Holy Cross has the better academic reputation while Providence is a good city location for college kids. I would think both schools would be fine for transfering. What will matter is your performance. Good luck!!!

Just a little something to consider while you make your selection

I have a child at holy cross who has yet been able to get into the classes he wants. (5 semesters) Classes are small and limited. They make no exceptions and will not increase a class regardless of how necessary it is to your major. It is frustrating, and dissappointing for my child. You may have to change your major because of the inability to get the classes you need.
Even introductory courses are limited. Even if you are first on line to register
believe me my child has tried everything.

The same problem exists for dorm selection. Limited choices too many people and your just out of luck

Also they offer a financial aid package that they feel is okay to withdraw once you have committed to them.
Question any offer and get guaranteed before you sign

Also if you want an institution where the administration cares about you stay away from holy cross. Although the size would suggest a little personalized attention this is not at all the case They will tell you that maybe this wasn't the school for you

Not at all in keeping with the Jesuit traditiions
Only worried about the big buck
Very dissappointed mom

My d was a student at HC for 1 year, returned for second year and decided to leave before school ever began. Her issue was with her sport and not at all with the school. In fact, the school went out of their way to try to change her mind but she was very stubborn and intent on going to a D-3 school where she would get the play time she wanted. The Dean met with her and called us, and in our opinion went out of their way to assure her if she changed her mind she would be welcomed back.

I realize everyone has a different experience when these issues occur but feel that in our situation they did all they could. They also were very helpful in getting her transcripts and recommendations out to other schools. Would recommend HC to anyone who asks and so would d.

Holy Cross has a much higher reputation in New England/New York area and the HC campus is far superiors. Outside of the Notheast one knows the difference.

It depends what your major is. If you're pre-med like me, Holy Cross has a terrific placement rate into med school. HOWEVER they will shoo you out of the program if you are not up to a certain standard, hence making their placement rate go up. We have a family friend who is a doctor and he said that PC is great with medical school. Providence is a nicer city than Worcester in my opinion but HC is closer to Boston, etc.

I find it contradictory that you got into Holy Cross but not into Boston College. Holy Cross is a much better school which has been considered among the best schools in that nation for decades. BC has recently seen its popularity rise, that is true, but Holy Cross has always been an excellent choice. It has a strong alumni network, a Jesuit presence, and a history of producing leaders in all fields. One of the main advantages is that Holy Cross only offers undergraduate degrees, meaning that the undergraduates are the focus of the school. Go to Holy Cross, get a superb education, and enjoy your success in whatever field you choose to enter.

Please clarify your position. In our neck of the woods ( a major East Coast metropolitan area), Holy Cross is barely acknowledged outside of the Catholic high schools. Also, around here, BC is seen as much more competitive in terms of admissions. Sounds like your have a lot of purple pride and you are very proud of your HC education. However, most of that success can also be found at BC and other fine schools.
