Hey everyone, I’m going to be attending as a freshman in the Fall, and I was wondering, is there any special Davis program that can help me NOT go home for the Holidays? I really don’t want to go home…like at all. I know a lot of student’s get homesick, but I would bet my life-savings that I won’t be in that category. So far I have about $1600 dollars, i need 4177 for my expected contributions BUT I have 4100 in scholarships. I’m not and haven’t been huge on school spirit, but I’m willing to do almost anything short of Red Cross to keep from going back to the Bay. Also, my dad has collected thousands in baseball cards, and he’s giving them to me (Crates of cards, unopened, sets etc.) I won’t be taking these things to Davis, but I certainly will have a pretty good sum of money around the time school starts/ these “holidays” start, and probably have some of them shipped to me to help get more income. I applied for the MURPPS program if that affects anything.

there has to be a way, i’m sure a lot of students just stay at school. if you don’t mind me asking, what is so bad at home that you don’t want to go back for a few days?

Well, the dorms will be closed during winter break from what I’ve been told at orientation, so I don’t know how you’re going to stay on campus if the dorms are closed, unless you make friends with those who live in the apartments and they let you stay over during the holidays…

@perfectsky: Well in a nutshell, It’s time for me to leave and stay gone. “Home” isn’t really real for my “family”, who are just a group of loose affiliates. I’m not trying to sound like a downer, but I would just really rather stay at school doing work, or sitting on my couch or something, that’s basically all holidays for me, but with an uncomfortable air in my house. :/

@Sopranokitty: Yea I know, which is why I need to find some way to work around that, and i don’t make friends easy, so I doubt that will happen. It makes no sense if someone brings valuables to the campus, and they just…lock the doors? I would be shocked if somebody didnt lose an X-box or a TV or something, stolen by another person in the dorms.

Your best bet might be the suggestion earlier - post a flyer and/or make friends with some sophomores who have an apartment. Offer to apartment sit or offer to clean it or offer a small rent for over the breaks.

Theft is common in the dorms and so are stolen bikes. If I had any other valuables besides a TV, PS3, etc, that could not be replaced, I’d get a storage garage or something.

And if you are that insistent about not moving back home, here a few links for an apartment search …

Hope things work out for you, and good luck with your studies.

Ahh, so most have apartments/rent out others apartments for the week. What about conference housing? Do they have some sort of special for the break perhaps?

well, no. I think ‘most’ go home for the breaks. Especially the freshman who
live in dorms that are closed during that time. After freshman year, you will be
living in an apartment anyway, so the dorms closing won’t affect you. You just
need to find someplace to crash during your first year. You might want to
give the student housing office a call and ask what they suggest.

Ahh, well I just hoped someone would be there. I’m actually likely to apply as an RA sophomore year :P. Thanks for the info though

Hmm, regarding staying for winter break, you may want to ask your RA if they are allowing residents to stay for special circumstances. I assume they may let some students (such as international students) stay since they don’t really have another home that is easily accessible.

However, even if they do, remember that the dining commons will be closed so you’ll be spending A LOT of money on food… and the dorms will be eerily quiet!

For any other holiday (even spring break, thanksgiving, etc), the dorms will remain open, but probably 80-90% of students choose to go home. It’ll be very lonely once again during those times…lol.
