Home School Acceptances, Class of 2013!

Homeschooled for the past 12 years, and I’m off to University of Chicago in the fall! :D

congratulations to both radhilicious and butternut

Hi, this question is for MyOLAhome, do you mind sharing how you prepared your son during high school? I am really impressed with his Stanford admission. My 13 year old son is aspiring to play tennis for Stanford. Of course, the Lord willing…thanks.

PM sent; DS was accepted to MIT, Stanford, Duke, Rice, & UGA honors.

Homeschooled all my life.

Accepted at Princeton, MIT, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, Notre Dame

Waitlisted UPenn and Dartmouth

Attending Princeton!

My daughter is a home schooled '11 at Princeton. I’m sure should love PMs about her experience and to answer questions.

My girlfriend, who doesn’t use CC, is headed off to Palm Beach Atlantic University in the Fall. She was homeschooled through most of Elementary and all of Middle and High School.

Hey Butternut, I’m not sure if you’re even still checking this thread, but i’m a prospective Chicago applicant. Hope you come back to share some of your experiences there, because i’d love to hear them!

My homeschooled all the way through (with community college classes starting at 15) first child has been accepted to every UC she applied to (San Diego, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and Davis) plus the University of Oregon. I fully expect her to be accepted to the two common app schools she applied to. Her college list was shaped by the sport she plays before any other consideration, but after having been told flat out that “no UCs” accepted homeschoolers as freshmen, I’m pleased.

Congratulations to your daughter, Stefani!

UC has really changed their tune in the past few years; in fact, they even have a link on their website specifically for homeschoolers. The hard work and persistence of California homeschoolers has finally paid off. :-)

My D has been homeschooled since the middle of first grade. Her EA apps were accepted by Univ. of Denver, and George Mason Honors College. She chose George Mason. I’ve been nothing but really excited for her–until today, when she got the orientation info. Now I think I might throw up! Just a little nervewracking, but still exciting!

It’s been fun reading about all of the homeschool successes!

@sbjdorlo, I tried to find the UC homeschool link but couldn’t. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks! :-)

Aw, Marbling, it will be ok! My son is 3000 miles away at MIT and having a great time. We skype, we text, we facebook. I feel as close to him as when he was at home. Of course we miss him but knowing he’s happy makes us happy and grateful.

Musubi,

Here are a few links from various colleges. Each addresses homeschooling.

Congratulations to all on your acceptances! Makes us proud!

@sbjdorlo, thanks so much for those links! :-)

Well, many still say that the only paths are by exception, examination, or Act of God : )

We simply applied as though she were any other freshman applicant, and will never really know what they thought.

Some school has two Ultimate Frisbee teams that is going to be very very happy, especially since in addition to her, her terrific athlete friend will probably go.

Thanks so much, Sbjorlo!

Just to clarify, while Davis is typical of the UCs, saying:
“The courses of homeschools and unapproved high schools are not accepted by the University of California and cannot be used to establish minimum UC admission requirements. If you are a homeschooled student or attended a California high school without a UC-approved course list, you must establish your academic record through test scores or as a community college transfer student.”

She did NOT apply as a CC transfer. She used her CC courses as some of her A-G requirements. I think those requirements may be more waive-able than the UCs generally advertise.

Stefani - I am not sure if the UC application has changed in the 5+ years since my son applied, but back then there was no way to indicate if you were applying by exam. We just filled in the application, and then sent it off. I assume they figured out you were applying by exam. I guess it sort of goes like this - well, this applicant does not have the A-Gs, so toss them in that pile and we will look at it later. I actually called UCSD because, at the time, they had a point system, and I was trying to figure out what his points would be. They said they had do few ‘by exam’ applicants each year that they just looked at them separately.

My son got into UCLA, UCB and UCSD without (technically) having any of the A-Gs, but in reality, had everything but fine arts.

My 18 year old son just got accepted into the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering. He will be transfering in as a junior, having spent the past few years earning an associate’s degree in math/science at our local community college.

He has always been homeschooled, so this felt like a wonderful validation for us. Even though he has a 4.0 at his CC, I was still worried because he doesn’t have any “real” high school background, no school sports, no SATs or ACTs, etc…

It’s great to hear of other homeschoolers’ successful transition to universities!

Wow, excellent VillageMom! U of M is one of the best out there! :-)

Thank you, Sbjdorlo! We are crazy thrilled. Thankfully UM is practically in our backyard.

Unfortunately(?) all of our children are different from one another, so it’s not like we can plug them all into the same path that has worked for our oldest. We’ll be stressing over this homeschooling/college thing for years to come!
