Homeschooler Here - Match Me!

Okay so I already have a pretty decent idea of where I'd like to apply, but I was moreso interested to hear the consensus of where, in terms of admissions difficulty/prestige, you fine folks believe I belong academically. I'm not asking in terms of finances, aid, or otherwise- purely from a 'where am I likely to get in' point of view.

Hmmm hard to say because you’re homeschooled. But your test scores are amazinggggg! Like spare me some. Lol.

I think what would make you stand out, since you are homeschooled, is to score 2300? But that’s just to insure your spot. And only one AP classes? Idk how they’d feel about that.

I think the you have a chance but it’s not guaranteed. Like probably 75-80% chance.

Keep up the good work!

What exactly are you telling him? 75-80% chance where?

OP, private or public? Does cost matter to you? Large or small school?

As said, this is more to just see where I can get in to academically, where CC feels I belong on the admissions scale, so cost isn’t what I’m worried about here.

But I’m open to all private schools and any TX publics. Don’t want to OOS public. Mid-sized pref.

anyone? :</p>

There is no point in assembling a list that does not take financial considerations into account, unless you will not need any financial aid and you are not hoping for merit scholarships.
Have you tried the SuperMatch tool on the home page of this website?

Have a look at this older link: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1364300-325-most-selective-schools-ranked-sat-75th-percentile.html</a>. You’re sitting at a 1390. Start with the schools at about a 1320 75th percentile and go up as high as you like, maybe 1400 for “match” schools. How many is that? Over 80? Filter them according to your preferences.

You see why folks here are hesitant to provide you with a list? It’s fruitless.

Hi,
I’m looking to transfer for next year. I’m currently a freshman at Miami University (OH) and am hating it here. This school was my fallback, and I am attending 100% for financial reasons (I have a full tuition merit scholarship).

The problem is, most of the schools I am researching do not extend significant merit aid to transfer students. I have a 36 ACT, 800s on both my SAT IIs, 5’s on all 9 of my AP tests, a 4.0 GPA from high school, etc. I know that this kind of info is less important when transferring but I’m just giving it for background. I expect to have a strong GPA (fingers crossed) this year at college as well.

I’m looking for suggestions of good schools that will give me a merit package or that are not too expensive on their own. My family doesn’t qualify for financial aid, but we can’t afford $50k/year. State schools are fine, I just want a well-ranked university that I can afford. Thanks!

Transfer students are judged mainly on college GPA for admission and scholarships (which are less common than for frosh). High school achievements are still considered if you apply to transfer at the sophomore level, but are likely to have minimal to no importance if you apply to transfer at the junior level.

What do you dislike about Miami University, and what are you looking for in a school? Or you are looking only for rankings?

“My family doesn’t qualify for financial aid, but we can’t afford $50k/year. State schools are fine, I just want a well-ranked university that I can afford.”

Well, what can your family afford?

I see from a prior post you are actually a MN resident. U Minnesota would only cost $25K for you. [Estimating your costs](http://onestop.umn.edu/finances/costs_and_tuition/cost_of_attendance/index.html?year=2013-14&residency=resident&program=undergrad&CSOM=false)

We can afford about $20,000. My dad is dead set against me (or him) taking out any loans because he will have to cosign on them and he doesn’t want to risk having to use his retirement fund to pay them back if for some reason I can’t. He’s pretty pessimistic about the economy so he’s been conservative in what he will spend on our educations and on loans, etc.

I just feel like Miami is not a great school academically, and the social scene is much too party-heavy for my taste. The kids tend to be rich and snobby. I do like the size of the school and all the clubs it offers, so that’s something that I would be looking for if I transferred.

You can take out a Stafford/Direct loan for $6.5K as a Sophomore - without a cosigner. That will bridge the gap for UMinn.

what do you hate about Miami of OH?

MnKid…

Are you sure that you dad will let you give up a full tuition scholarship???

I’ve already got two solid safeties (TAMU & UTD)

Have your parents said that they’ll pay all the costs for those schools? I think TAMU is about $25k per year.

Transfers don’t have many choices. Merit money is very rare so your best bets are either a school that doesn’t cost too much (check out the SUNY’s for example, or Truman State) or your in-state options.

Mom2CK, that $25K at TAMU only covers tuition. https://financialaid.tamu.edu/Cost/COA_Undergrad.aspx</a></p>
