i am typically a reserved cc member but now that i have locked down two successful quarters here at UCLA, i can finally take it easy with the academic side of UCLA and begin to be a constant contributor to this site.

granted my previous two quarters were filled with horrible professors, lazy ta's i did i have a couple of bright spots with faculty. However there was something that really shocked me, i really didn't realize the drop off of some students here at UCLA.

Some of my friends from high school that elected to attend UCLA with me, have completely lost their flare to excel, these individuals graduated head of me in terms of rankings and board scores were in the mid 2100. So why is it that so many people, that i know at least, seem to drop off in performance, one has a 2.5 GPA and he is a Poli. Sci. major and the other is a Phy. Sci major with a 2.3 GPA. It doesn't make any fu@@@@ sense, this kids are really smart.

Then there are individuals on my floor that have suffered the same fate as well??????????

yah.
i got a low grade in an easy class that was a REPEAT of a class i'd had in high school (physics 10 was basically honors physics all over again).
but i got complacent, and cocky, because i aced the first midterm.
grade sunk a lot after the second midterm and the lack of turned-in hw.
and it didn't come back up after the final.
i was still adjusting... now i know to keep on top of things, because unlike in high school, a few things slacked-off on now can REALLY bite you in the butt later!

My high school friends that excelled in high school are still doing pretty well as far as I know, but then again if they weren't, they wouldn't tell me :P

yeah, my experience has been similar to liyana's. Fall quarter I aced the two midterms in math, got cocky and ended up failing the final (curve taken into account), and all my low homework scores ended up affecting my grade more than I wished :/ but I think I've adjusted to college academics pretty well after the first quarter.

Random college life articles that I've read said that people tend to slack off more when they get into college since there's no one (no parents/teachers) to keep tabs on you anymore.

But I've seen most of my floormates working hard, and we usually keep tabs on each other to make sure they're not neglecting an essay til last minute or whatever.

i suppose it really depends on WHY people worked hard in high school.
we know that they did, because otherwise they wouldn't have ended up here.
but if their goal was to get into a good college, and now they've attained that, why work hard? it's so much... work... to work hard!
people with other reasons (grad school, desire for a specific career, or just intrinsic motivation/desire to push themselves) will continue to do well.
other people just need someone to light a fire under their butt xD

if i lived in a res hall i think it'd be hard to work too. but living in teh suites (and probably plaza is the same) lets you work when you need to. for me, if i dont get straight certain grade, im in big trouble :)
