I have a couple of friends who are slackers and have mediocre grades (3.0-3.4GPA). Plus they hardly study and never put effort into their school work. I don't really think they "deserve" to get into schools like UCLA or Cal because I have other friends who are way more deserving, but have been rejected from both of those colleges.

Am I bad person to hope the slackers don't get into UCLA or Cal... and if they dooo get in, I'd be p1ssed. HAha, i needed to get this off my chest.

I mean, I look back at HS and the smartest kids went to UCLA. Then I see the one guy who just flakes by and transfer to UCLA with okay grades. Yea, It's a good thing he got a second chance, but he isn't that greaT!

I would say you're not in a position to pass judgment on who should get in or who doesn't unless you're part of the admissions committee at UCLA/Cal, since they can see the application and take into account things that go beyond seeing Joe Blow as "slacker." The system's not perfect, though.

hey, are you calling me a boarderline slacker with a boarderline mediocre gpa? ;) although, i dont have a have an extremely high gpa, i really do believe that i should be admitted.

I semi-slacked in High School because I knew we didn't have the money for me to go to a 4 year Univ. right out of HS. I only took 1 AP each during Jr. and Sr. year. I didn't even take the SATs... I got my indecisiveness out of the way in a CCC and now that I'm older and more mature I can get a quality education out of a UC rather than not knowing for sure what I wanted to do with my life and paying UC tuition for it.

And in my CCC time I worked full time and put a lot of effort into ECs, including traveling to Sri Lanka to help with the effort to rebuild after the tsunami.

GPA as a single determining factor doesn't say anything about a person's quality and potential. I'd be careful about labeling others as "not that great", it's a very unhealthy habit to pick up and a slippery slope down to pride and envy.

If you really think your friends should work harder, then perhaps you should organize study groups with them. If you think they're influencing you negatively, then perhaps you should spend less time hanging out with them.

Turn your negative energy into positive energy.

I wouldn't wish that upon them nor bother worrying about it. 3.0-3.4 is still good. I woudn't call these people slackers either. Perhaps in your eyes you see them this way, but they have obviously put some effort into their grades to maintain mostly A's and B's. 3.0 is 85% and 3.5 is 90%, so that's like a strong B or weak A average...
