There are so many. Freshman year, she was offered acceptance into two different societies. As a Junior, now an offer of invitation to Mortar Board. Which ones make a difference or do any? Money is tight and if it's just a fancy certificate, probably not worth it. Grad school is in the plans. How well received are these titles on applications? Thanks in advance!

what discipline is she in?

Phi Beta Kappa is commonly considered the only one of actual value. On the other hand, the other ones, such as Mortar Board and Golden Key are accredited. There are also some exclusive scholarship opportunities for members.

Yeah, I’ve been getting a bunch of these things too. I always figured they were not worth it. But yeah, PBK would be a definite yes.

the freshmen honor societies are probably not worth it… PBK is definitely a ‘yes’. If you can use the freshmen honor society money to do Mortar Board instead, I would say that might be a good idea. Mortar Board does do some service related things. I don’t think the freshmen honor society actually do anything. They are basically saying “my GPA was X” which a grad school will already know b/c they have the transcript.

…in the sciences (where I am familiar), they will not care at all about honor societies.
