Honors and Competitive Scholarships

Thank you so much!

Our D16 is at UKy on the Patterson, and with the Patterson there was no interview. I don’t recall the order or timing of things. I’m no help there!

We did reach out to the Office of FA & Scholarships because we had not yet received official notification of the Patterson. It turned out all they needed was some paperwork from the HS GC, and we were good to go.

We found contacting the administrative office directly resulted in a friendly accurate answer. Less so with the Admissions Rep, who was not up to speed re: scholarships.

Good luck everyone! Go Cats!

Ok great I will call when they reopen next week-

Does anyone know if UK will have Merit Weekend orientations again in March? I didn’t see anything on the website. Wanted to setup travel plans.

While I don’t know anything for sure, you can look at their calendar, and Merit Weekend is listed as reserving multiple classrooms on March 17-18, 24-25, 31-1.

Thank you so much! I think the dates are spot on. Glad I didn’t book flights for the weekend I thought it would be!

Here is where we are at the moment…I’m still slightly confused. S17 is accepted to Lewis Honors College and offered a Lester Engineering Scholarship and a Provost Scholarship. I am hoping that he is still in the running for a Presidential and here is my reasoning: He is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and UK sent a letter acknowledging his possible qualification for the Patterson Scholarship…assuming he makes finalist. If that should not be the case I hope that he will get consideration for a Presidential. My only question is whether by February they would all be gone. :<

Isn’t the Patterson automatic? Seems there should be no worry given how few don’t make NMF.

Believe me I want to think so!! The only X-factor is a 3.69 GPA. No C’s but certainly not a 99th percentile GPA. Test scores are 99th percentile. Essay is solid. IDK…I am a worrier.

The Patterson is automatic if you are a National Merit finalist and Kentucky is your #1 choice. My D is a Patterson Scholar.

@AuntieFascist - I am taking my daughter to see UK in April. She is likely a NMSF, so I’m curious about the Patterson. Do you mind if I send you a private message to ask you a couple of questions? Thanks!

@crazy4info

I’ll field questions as well, if you’re interested. I have a freshman there on the Patterson.

crazy4info, fire away!!

If you are not admitted into the Honors College, are you ineligible for the Presidential Scholarship?

Question/curiosity: So shortly after being accepted to UK I received the $10k Heritage Scholarship, but I have been hoping to receive the Presidential. I thought that I am a competitive applicant with a 33 ACT and 3.94 GPA.

I just logged into myUK and clicked on the view awards section and the federal unsub/sub loans now show up, along with a $5k a year ‘KY Futures Scholarship’. Does this mean there is no chance to receive the Presidential now? Are they still in the process of deciding? Any input is appreciated!!

Presidential will be announced 2/15 I believe.

@tos623ew This may be a dumb question, but how do you get to the view awards part? My child was also awarded the heritage back in December and is also hoping for a Presidential, but when I go into UKY, I don’t see anything in financial aid except that we should fill out the FAFSA (which we have.) Could you explain how you get to that screen? I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I was actually having the exact same problem until I was playing around with it. When you first click on Financials and go to accept the terms/conditions as I assume you have been doing, it displays no awards because it has it defaulted to the 2016-17 academic year. To view your current award simply click Financials and then select the 2017-18 academic year in the reward year box. You might have to accept the terms again but this should allow you to view the award. I’m still confused about the extra $5k that I received as it is called the “KY Futures Scholarship” and I cannot find a listing for a scholarship with the same name ANYWHERE. It sounds like the Presidential awards haven’t been finalized yet so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to your child!

Thanks!! My child also has the “KY Futures” listed- wonder if that is a good or bad sign. We can’t figure out whether or not to apply for housing before the Presidential Scholarships are announced. I hate to lose the deposit and can’t really figure out if you have to enroll first, but the financial awards are key to deciding whether to go,so I can’t understand why such an early housing date for Honors. Sigh- can’t wait for the year to be finished and all this decided.

Registration for Merit Weekends is available to book in your My UK account if you are eligible. They are scheduled for the last 3 weekends in March.
