should i join the honor society at my community college? will it help with admissions?

that is. to UCs...

It's garbage.

are you serious? you know about ASG...

haha cardinal BUILD ON THAT STATEMENT, why is it garbage

I have to agree. I thought about signing up for AGS but they were just too unorganized and they don't really do anything.

ok thanks for the info..i was also thinking the same thing..i questioned a organizaiton that is strictly about having a high gpa and not much else is really mentioned in teh intro..thats weak..

Is anyone on PCC's AGS?

It's an EC...of course it will help with admissions. If you're majoring in business, and want to transfer, from a Community College mind you, to a senior college that has a good business program...why would you not have AGS indicated on your transcript. They also have scholarships set aside just for members, as well as many colleges offering scholarships for you just having it indicated on your transcript. (Of course, I can't really vouch for much of anything in Cali because your CC system is...well...complicated). You shouldn't really be asking most of the members herewhether or not an HONORS SOCIETY is worth joining or not...because most of them don't even participate in any ECs while at the CC level, well the ones at a CC anyway (it's a generalization, but it's also more than likely true when you are bashing clubs that have been known for success).

Then again, I also am assuming that you (ilovecalifornia) will actually participate in the activities of your AGS, which sort of goes along with membership, and not just sign up for it. Then, unfortunately, it's useless to you...as is any other EC.

AGS is useful IF YOU BECOME EXTREMELY PRO-ACTIVE.
Take a leadership position in AGS and plan AGS activities.

If you just plan on signing up for the program and do nothing else but go to the meetings and just participate in the activities, it'll do you no good.

Sure, it'll open you up for scholarship opportunity, but most of them are monopolized by those who are actively taking up the leadership position in AGS. "Regular members" of AGS will be very lucky to get one.

In another word, unless you plan on being EXTRMEELY pro-active (meaning actually taking a leadership position) and dedicate big portion of your time in AGS, don't join. Waste of money, it wont do you much good for admission.

Rather spend those time in studying and doing some REAL useful ECs such as community service or internship. Those are GUARANTEED PLUS for admission.

AGS provides community service, well, at least at my CC.

well I'd much rather prefer doing community service for free rather than having to pay the AGS membership fee to do it :P

I just think it's stupid that AGS claim themselves as HONORS program.
I dunno if it's just me, but AGS isn't in anyway related to academics (besides the 3.0 requirement, but c'mon... 3.0 really doesnt deserve honors-title). It's more of a community service thing.

that honors thing is dumb as hell!

DHL, thank you for typing exactly what I was too lazy to type. To me it seems like you just buy a mark that says you are an honor student. I am pretty sure that my honors courses and my 3.94 will be enough to show that I am a good student.

In truth, I really don't think there's ever enough as long as I have "reach" schools that I am applying for. I feel there's a need to do as much as possible to make a better application. Even though the AGS notation may be insignificant in reality, i'd rather not take the chance. Plus there's comm. service opportunities.

waste of 75.00 dollars.

If you really wanted to do community service, I'm sure you can find other avenues to participate.

As Dhl3 said, most of the 'scholarships' are monopolized by those on the AGS board. And I also don't think 3.0 at the community college level is deserving of a 'honors' demarcation (the average gpa at my old community college was a 3.0...I don't think its very honorable to have an average gpa).

Also, the admissions committees should be able to tell you are a good student from your gpa alone (as someone else suggested)

Cheers.

thanks for the opinions guy

Wow..the AGS membership is only $12 dollars at my school.
