Honors Carolina Nomination

If you don’t get a “9 special opportunities” survey, does this mean that you will not be selected for the honors program?

I don’t really think anybody outside of admissions could answer that because it seems like they’re doing it differently this year. Last year, we got invitations separately and it was not one of the choices on the special opportunities list. If you really want to know, I would suggest asking on the blog or emailing an admissions officer.

Yesterday DD received letter inviting her to the Honors Program which was 1st choice in her submission for 9 opportunities

I received an Honors invitation today. I’m not sure if it’s the special opportunity I was selected for or if it’s separate…

My daughter received invitation today in mail for Honors Carolina. It was not her 1st choice of ‘9 special opportunities’, but she was happy with invite. She is OOS.

rbikid- Thanks for all of the information. We have been trying to figure all of this out and your comments have been very helpful. Congrats on getting auto. into the business school. That sounds like it was a great perk for you!

It sounds like the format was slightly different last year in that the HC was sent out separately from the 9 opportunities letter. I read on a Q&A that the 9 opp. was sent to 1000 students and that they try to match you up with your first choice. It sounds like if you put HC first then you probably already received an invite. My D put it second and hasn’t heard anything yet so keeping fingers crossed that she does get her first choice as that will help in her decision to attend UNC. There was some disappointment in not being invited to Scholarship Day or getting the HC invite after making it to the SF in the M-C and getting into other schools HC. (two friends with lower stats did receive these UNC invites). Hopefully something is in the works for her. She should be receiving NMF status any day now so that will open up other opportunities to think about if UNC doesn’t value her.

Jessimo093- When and how did you find out about the $2500?

It was probably sometime in March. I’m not sure, but it was definitely later in the year.

My son was recently notified the he got in the Kenan-Flagler Assured Admission Program after responding that letter the thread is talking about. Anyone with more info on this program?

My daughter received the same invite. It actually “sealed the deal” for her with UNC. It was her 2nd choice pick off that “9 Opportunities” letter. Here’s more information: [Assured Admission Program - Undergraduate Business - UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School](Undergraduate Business for High School Students | UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School)

How were your s/d notified? Has anyone heard from any of the other Opportunities?

I have a few friends at UNC with assured admission. Basically, you are guaranteed admission to KF your sophomore year assuming you take and don’t bomb the pre-reqs, which is a big weight off your DS’s shoulders should that be his major of interest. There are also some required and some optional events throughout freshman year. It’s an awesome opportunity–congrats to your son!

Yes…thanks for the KF AAP info…I found much more on the web site than my first look. Yes, my son is excited…did not know such a small group was selected! Someone asked how he was informed …by e-mail last week. His best friend found out about “Honors” though e-mail as well. Congrats to you daughter!..we my see you at UNC in the fall…hanging out at KF.

Thanks, momofcollegeboys – you too! Like I said – this sealed the deal for her over other options. Are you in state?

Daughter just received letter today awarding her one of 40 $5K Summer Research Fellowships. It was her first choice of the opportunities and she is very happy…

Where did you hear there were only 40 offered? My daughter also received that but I didn’t see anything in the lett that indicated how many we’re offered.

It’s on the UNC website.
http://www.admissions.unc.edu/Academics/FY_Opportunities/research_fellows.html

Well, so it is! Thanks!!

My DD also got the Research Fellowship letter. It was her second choice. She also got her first choice Carolina Honors.

My son just got a “Study Abroad” grant of $5k in the mail on Monday. In addition to the KF AAP he received earlier. And shockingly…He was just awarded the James M Johnston scholarship. Came in the mail the same day as the “Study Abroad”. We are stunned he received so much. Congrats to all on the good things Carolina is offering!
