Honors Carolina Nomination

Son has been nominated for one or more of nine special opportunities including Honors Carolina and Carolina Research Scholars Program for first year student. So happy for him.

Congratulations to your son, he must be a special student.

One question…how did he receive notification that he had been chosen for these things, online, by letter, etc?

Again, congratulations!

Congratulations! However I would like to mention something - if this is the ‘rank your choices’ of special opportunities email, do NOT rank the Research Scholars Program! That is what I got, and it is not actually anything special. The program is something that any undergrad can participate in. The invitation to join is really just an invitation to learn more about it, while the rest of the opportunities actually give you things like money for research/study abroad, assured admission into the b or j school, or first choice for your first year seminar.

He got it by letter, in which he was nominated to receive one or more of nine special opportunities and was told to respond a follow-up email survey (not received yet) by 1/29/2012.

Thanks for your advice, jessimo093! Did you set any scholarship?

I wasn’t invited to scholarship day, but I got a $2500 a year scholarship from UNC that’s for IS students they want to keep in state basically. If one of the options is money for a summer study abroad experience, I would definitely recommend that he goes for that one unless assured admission into one of the schools is more important to him. Study abroad is expensive!

My DD also got the letter for nomination. Any advise is appreciated.

For all of those who got their letters: are you IS or OOS? I haven’t received any kind of letter, though I received my online decision.

I got the same letter. In-state.

My daughter received the letter today too. We’re IS.

I got this as well as an email nomination/application for the Pogue Scholarship. In-State!

Seems the Assured Admission for the Business School has been the most difficult opportunity to secure in the past. Although I would like to go to Kenan-Flagler junior year, I’ll probably go for the Study Abroad.

We received this letter today, out of state.

Okay, so I received the letter about “nine special opportunities” and one of them was Honors Carolina. But it says I have to complete an email survey if I wish to be considered. Does that mean nomination is not the same thing as an invitation? And did some people already get an invitation?

Last year I received mail informing me I had been selected for Honors Carolina (I never requested it). Separately, I received mail asking me to rank several other “special opportunities” as mentioned above. I selected the assured admit to Kenan-Flagler as my #1 and shortly after was notified I was selected for that also. You can apply for Honors Carolina after you are here, and anyone can enroll in UNC honors classes. Honors Carolina members do get first shot at enrolling in honors classes (because we have to take a minimum of two a year), but, they don’t seem to fill up, so, it doesn’t seem like a big advantage over the general student population. I’d recommend selecting something else like one of the assured admittance or the grants. Kenan-Flagler BSBA is the hardest major to gain admittance for at UNC. The Kenan-Flagler Business School saw a 15 percent increase in applicants this year, a jump that school officials said came, in part, because of the uncertain job market. This year, 691 students applied to the undergraduate business program and they accepted approximately 55%. If, business is possibly of interest, ask for that. If you are granted assured acceptance and you change your mind on getting a BSBA before enrolling in KF you are not committed and can pursue something else. But, it is nice not to be sweating the application process at the end of your sophmore year and they also do a terrific job of making you feel part of KF from day one on campus.

@rbikid So there are official, separate Honors Carolina invitations as well as the 9 special opportunities (including HC) nomination? Do you know how likely it is that I’d be selected for Honors Carolina or the KF Business school assurance if I rank them highly on my survey? In other words, how likely is it that nominated students actually receive what they requested on the survey?

Yes, I received separate notifications. The “special opportunities” letter did not offer HC, but, remember I was already invited. Every student who is accepted into UNC is automatically considered for HC. This year, HC expects to enroll 300 incoming students, or about 7 percent of the first-year class. As I indicated prior, if you don’t get invited to HC as a first year, you can apply later.

I really can’t predict your chances. I got my #1 choice of KF, but, I have friends that did not get their #1 choice. I think the stronger your academic credentials are the better chance you have. What UNC is doing with the “special opportunities” offer is trying to improve their acceptance yield of the strongest academic candidates. Most of which have, or will have, choices to make based upon opportunities and acceptances elsewhere.

Thank you so much! I was really confused about what the whole thing meant. I will definitely take into account what you said about how the business school is extremely selective. Very helpful! :D

You are welcome. Hope to see you on campus!

Was this letter received seperate from the acceptance letter? Thanks.

Yes - separate letters.

I received a “9 special opportunities” survey, and also an invitation to Scholarship Day that included an “Honors reception.” I did not receive a separate invitation for Honors; should I be expecting one or should I assume that I will not be in Honors unless I rank it in my survey?
