My daughter was accepted to LSA in Dec and was invited to send in an application to the honors college. She hasn't yet, but still wants to apply. I realize the official deadline is not until much later, but does it get harder to get admitted to honors the later you apply? Also, exactly how competitive is it to get accepted into honors? Thanks in advance for replies.

The sooner, the better. From their website - “We recommend that you apply to the University of Michigan and the College of Literature Science and the Arts early as possible.” and “While we do have deadlines specified below, a student interested in Honors should send her/his essay to us as soon as possible.”

Generally, it doesn’t appear to be too difficult to get admitted so long as one is a somewhat proficient writer and has an inquisitive mind.

1 in 10 admitted LSA applicants are accepted to the honors college.

I would say a 10 percent admittance rate would suggest that it is rather difficult.

Ya but not everyone admitted is invited to apply I believe.

I kind of want to do it, but I haven’t applied yet and I HATE writing essays and am not really creative…so idk

I believe I read that 1500 are invited to apply and 500 get in. I don’t know how many of those invited and how many of those not invited do indeed apply. I think the chances are good enough that it’s worth applying if you want to get in.

If you don’t want to write the essay and really don’t care enough to, you can always be accepted without an essay. I was invited in November to apply, accepted in March (without an essay).

This figure is correct; it’s from the Honors Program’s web page. That same page also specifies that it’s easier to be accepted if you apply earlier in the admissions cycle (ergo, harder if you apply later). I don’t think being formally invited gives an applicant an edge. It’s far more important to write a good, expressive essay. As QwertyKey mentioned, the chances are good enough to take a shot.

500 is the number that they want to enroll (not admit, hence the wording on their site: ‘500 students is our target for the incoming class’), so I would assume they accept ~1000 students out of the 1500 that apply and then they admit a few who never submitted an essay.

Honestly, just write an interesting essay and you’ll be admitted. I personally loved mine, and I’m pretty sure I got in because of it. Also, I wasn’t invited, I just emailed the honors admissions director the day after I got into UMich and she set up the dropbox thing for me.

500 (give or take) get ACCEPTED each year…straight from the honors office.
