I'm a Texas resident, and I'm interested in applying to an honors college at UT, but I don't know which one to apply to. I definitely want to complete Pre-Med requisites, so I would want to take the honors science classes, but I'm interested in majoring in something besides science, something like Psychology. So would I apply to the Natural Science honors college or Plan II? I really don't know how this would work. Any tips/info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanksss

UT doesn’t have an ‘honors college’. UT has honors programs like Dean’s Scholars, Plan II, Health Science Honors, Engineering Honors, and Business Honors Program.

You can complete medical school pre-reqs by majoring in anything you want (including things like English, Philosophy, Psychology, etc).

UT offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Psychology, so may be able to get a degree in Psychology by being in Plan II or a Natural Science Honors program like DS or HSH. I’m not entirely sure but it seems possible.

On an aside, just because you want to go to medical school doesn’t mean you ‘have’ to take honors classes or be in honors programs. Just a thought…some people seem to think that honors classes are some sort of ‘pre-req’ to get into medical school when they are far from it. Just make good grades in whatever classes you’re in and that’s all medical school care about. An A in non-honors beats an A-/B+ in honors any day.

+1, solid advice.

UT’s fairly new Honors Program in College of Natural Sciences, Health Science Honors for those interested in careers in health sciences, is worth a look. Most of those accepted are pre-med, pre-dent, pre-vet or pre-pharm. Good advising…a lot of the program is handled in conjunction with Deans Scholars. But…an honors program is definitely not required to get in med school. Grades/MCAT are most important factor in med school admissions.

There are a couple of long time parent posters who have children who’ve successfully completed undergrad and been accepted into med school…and both are from Texas. They’ve always been very helpful. “curmudgeon” and “eadad” are their names.
