808, was that for Dean’s Scholars or another honor’s program? DS has said all along that they notify by USPS only. If it was DS, would you please tell your major?

Congrats on getting in to your honors program, whichever one it may be!

I also got into an honors program via email today.
Except it was the Health Science Honors, although I’m almost certain i applied for Dean’s Scholars instead. So right now I’m totally confused, and anxious :P

@UltimateNut, thanks! Sorry for not clarifying - it was Health Science Honors, even though I put Dean’s Scholars as my first choice. Maybe they put me in HSH since it focuses on medical professions, and I clearly stated I wanted to go to medical school and become a surgeon on my honors app? I’m totally guessing, but I’m wondering why nonetheless…

Health Science Honors was newly created last year. It’s definitely not as selective as DS, but it seems like there are many shared opportunities between the two honors programs. the requirements for courses are somewhat similar too.

Grats on your acceptances!

Congrats to all on your acceptances!

From the Health Sciences Website:

The CNS Health Science Honors Program (HSH) is UT’s first honors program specifically for students interested in the health professions. This is a select group - only about 50 students from an incoming College of Natural Sciences class of 2000 students - will be admitted to HSH each year.

The Fall 2010 HSH class was selected from the pool of elite applicants to the College of Natural Sciences Honors Program who indicated an interest in health sciences - medicine, public health, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and physical therapy.

So, it is definitely just as selective as Dean’s Scholars, and you all should be very proud that you got in! MeLuvRice, my guess is that you indicated one of the health sciences as your major, and that is why the college of NS put you into the health honors. And 808 it looks like the same thing happened with you.

Congrats again!

The College of Natural Sciences and premed in general are all about trying to weed you out of there program, and not giving you the support you need to succeed. Just wait until you get into your intro chem class, and you feel like a number in a class of 500 students. just wait until your intro bio professor curves the class so only 50% of the kids pass. Most of the professors don’t even care if you succeed. One intro chem professor actually stated that he takes pride in flunking his students. The College of Natural Sciences as a whole is a scam which baits high school students who were in the top 3 to 8 percent of their class with the idea that the college can make them a doctor. What they don’t tell you is that they could care less if you reach your goals. Don’t ruin your life by coming down the college of natural sciences/premed pathway. If you do you will probably end up as a research assistant in a small lab with little to no pay. However, it is entirely possible to end up in the service industry. Many college of natural science students who do not get into med school end up working as fast food cooks, waste management personnel, retail store associates (the people who scan your clothes), or even as taxidermists. Also I am not an idiot. I finished 5/500+ students in a Texas exemplary high school, scored a 2310 on my SAT, and was a national merit semifinalist. I got into DS and BHP. I choose DS, and it ended up being the worst decision of my life.

ilovetexas, it’s like that at any large university
and columbia has like 1000 people intro chem classes

med school has always been incredibly hard to get into, it has never been some sort of bait-and-switch
if you believed it was going to be a cakewalk, you were simply misled
sure, a lot of the bio majors will end up as lab techs who get paid a little above minimum wage, or as you mentioned, even worse in the service industry.
that’s the reality, what’s UT going to do about it? hand out free 4.0’s so everybody looks qualified?

ilovetexas: sorry to hear things aren’t working out for you. So, are you leaving UT? Or are you moving out of CNS?

I just talked to a friend in UT, and she said HSH is more for pre-med kids, and DS is for people who want to do pure research after college. She also said that the two programs don’t really mix that much, and the general view is that getting into DS is a “bigger deal” since it’s been around for much longer and HSH is sort of an offshoot. That being said, I still might choose HSH over DS if I get into both.

If I haven’t heard back from Honors yet, does that basically mean I was rejected? It seems like most people have already gotten their Dean Scholar’s/Health Science Honors acceptances back, including several kids that go to my school.

^
Not necessarily, I’d say you still have hope if you have a solid app. I’ve been told that there are 2 waves of Dean’s Scholar acceptances. I also had friends get in a couple months before I did, but they should be sending out another wave of letters sometime soon. (Heard this from a friend though, so I could be wrong. I applied to DS as well, so I’m waiting too.)

There have already been 2 waves of acceptances. My friends received theirs in late December and another one in early February. However, my friends (from the December acceptances) saw about only 20 students at DS Open House. I’ve read DS usually gets 50 freshman each year and assuming a 50 percent retention rate, there should be another wave (perhaps 100 favorable letters, in total?)

For context, my friends have SAT scores of around 2200+ and Subject scores of around 750+ (in math and science).

Hmm…I have stats similar to those too, but I’ve yet to receive anything from DS Honors :(

How about really good essays? Its going to be a shoot or miss because that is a subjective factor. Those are probably the deciding factor when comparing applicants with very high scores.

If we got deferred from CNS but accepted into McCombs/Cockrell, does that mean we are disqualified from the DS/TS honors?

@pinata: Not sure what “deferred” means? What did your status say?

Sorry, “deferred” was probably the wrong word, I just mean that I got into my second choice (cockrell) instead of my first (CNS).

I was accepted to Dean’s Scholars a couple weeks ago!

My friend from my school and I are attending the Open House this Monday. Anyone else going?

@jbrown93: Congrats!
