My D wants to pursue pre-med. I wonder which honor’s program is better between Dean’s Scholar and Health Science Honor Scholar.

As made obvious by its name, Health Science Scholars (formerly known as Health Science Honors) is designed specifically for pre-health professionals. The program provides unique opportunities like visits to UT Southwestern and a health-based senior thesis, among other things. Meanwhile, Dean’s Scholars is an honors programmed built around research. This means that most of the program’s events are focused on science and research, only bringing in health-related topics as they are relevant. Still, something like half of Dean’s Scholars are pre-med, and the program (purportedly) boasts a 100% medical school acceptance rate. If your daughter is aiming for top end medical schools, they will want to see a strong track record of research in her resume and DS might be the right place for her. On the other hand, if your daughter has no interest in research, she might feel more at home in HSS, where most everyone is pre-med.

Frever, it’s a good advice. Visting UT’s honors web., it seems like Dean’s Scholar could be better fir for my D. What is your opinion Plan II on top of Dean’s Scholar ? If it’s not good after 1st year at UT, can she drop it in order to focus on one program ?
My D has excellent SAT/GPA/IB/ECs and look for other private schools. I told her UT’s honors’ program especially for Dean’s scholar is bettern than many of other prestigious private colleges in path to medical school.

Many Dean’s Scholars students are also in Plan II. It’s a well respected program and gives students a unique education in the liberal arts. If that’s something your daughter is interested in, I would highly recommend it. And as you mentioned, if she doesn’t like either program then she always has the option to pursue another degree.

Dean’s Scholars and Plan II are both selective programs and the experience they provide is comparable to that of many “prestigious” private schools – we send students to Ivy medical schools every year. And if budget is a factor, then UT clearly shines in that regard.
