Honors college question

My S is a (very) late NMF applicant to UA. We are very grateful for the NMF package received, however, he was unable to apply for Fellows or CBHP, as the selections had already been made before he even applied. I was wondering what academic advantages do Fellows or CBHP recipients have over regular Honors College students, and if there are distinct advantages, would he be able to apply as a sophomore to Fellows or CBHP? He definitely wants to do research as an undergrad, would his not being either Fellows or CBHP preclude him from doing undergrad research? Would his UA academic experience be a notch below, not being in Fellows or CBHP?

You cannot apply to Fellows of CBHP as a sophomore. However, Dr. Sharpe has been known to consider applications to CBHP even this late in the year.

There are some distinct advantages to membership in CBHP and/or Fellows, which include, but are not limited to, a CBHP lounge, special classes, and community service opportunities. It is still possible to do research activities, but you will not have the backing of CBHP or UFE to find and get these research opportunities. For almost anything, you don’t actually need the honors college’s help even though they may offer it for many things. Most of one’s college classes and probably most of their college experiences involve things outside of honors.

Unlike some other colleges (and probably many high schools), I cannot see how being in Fellows or CBHP would automatically make your college experience a notch above all others. They are just two of the more well-publicized programs that UA offers. If your son gets to know professors and otherwise gets himself known (in a good way) by those in charge of various programs, good things can come his his way. CBHP and UFE are excellent programs that I would very highly recommend to anyone selected for them, but they are not the be all end alls of a UA experience.

only a very small number of kids get fellows or cbhp. you can not apply for fellows next year and i dont think you can apply for cbhp either. however, there are research possibilities available to kids not in these programs.
that being said, i think my son has decided to continue evaluating the schools he has been accepted to with a guarantee of research program rather than ua at this point (of course that could change just as the wind changes these days especially if he did get off reserve pool)

*Would his UA academic experience be a notch below, not being in Fellows or CBHP? *

I have 2 sons at UA…one in CBHP and the other isn’t. I wouldn’t say that the other son’s experience is a notch below.

I don’t know what your son’s major will be, but within various majors, there are many opportunities for research and internships IF the student is interested. For instance, those who take Dr. Caldwell’s bio class have opportunities to do research in the Caldwell Lab.

My kids regularly get emails from profs with internship and research opportunities. They have to turn down most of them because they can only do so much.
