@MelSpears @inktopaper I checked my financial aid yesterday in Self Service Carolina and the Provost Scholarship was put in there. I did not recieve notification about it, but I guess they just added it.
@sandstorm42 did you list univ of sc as your first choice for nmsc?
@sandstorm42 thanks! My son changed to undecided last week. This process may kill me. I wish he had a clear cut first choice, his keeps changing.
@sandstorm42 provost was in my sons portal also. Thanks for letting us know!
How do I apply for departmental scholarships?
@twinmommy Yes. Iâve known that it was my first choice for a while, so Iâve had USC listed since I applied for semifinalist.
Hi I was wondering if you could tell me a bit more about the Honors college. My daughter is also a sophomore at USC but she is not in the Honors college so she cannot offer any information. My son was accepted into the Honors college with in state tuition and 500 per year
@Mcckam809 I do not have any firsthand knowledge about USC Honors. However, I just saw this video about the Honors dorm and it got my son more excited to attend. My son hasnât made his final decision. Since we canât visit any schools now, heâs leaning towards USC. My nephew is a USC Freshman (Physics major) and he loves it. My nephew is not in Honors but heâs in Capstone and likes the community.

Anyone still around this thread?
Son has narrowed down to UofSC Honors College of Tulane Honors program.
Price is about the same after all said and done.
He will be majoring Mathematics and Business.
Just wondering if anyone else is making a similar choice, has in the past etc.
Making full list of prosâ and cons about the programs, the schools, the cities etc. Anyone else go about this differently> Have any sugeestions to add etc?
He has been to USC (we were to go back again, and now that they extended to Jun 1, who knows). He has not seen Tulane, as planned trip obviously cancelled. Dunno if they will extend and even then it may not be possible/sensible.
He has done the virtuals etc.
Appreciate any feedback/suggestions.
Good luck to everyone with their decisions.
@college130 Both are great options. They were the last two in play when my D was deciding five years ago. She chose U of SC Honors and had a great experience. Her majors were International Business and Econ and she is now working as a well-paid data analyst at a large company.
Some things you might consider:
Would your S enjoy watching the big-time football and basketball? Even though the football stadium isnât on campus, itâs easily accessible by shuttle (free for students). Game days are huge events with tens of thousands of students and visitors heading down well before game time. Big student section with great seats to which students can get âpointsâ by seeing other sporting events on campus (my D liked soccer) to assure them of getting free tickets (she had them for every game, all four years).
Basketball is a close walk from campus and the arena is a great place to see a game. Lots of bars and restaurants close to campus and reasonably priced (canât compare with the quality of food and drink in New Orleans, of course, but might be more manageable on a student budget) as well as things like CVS, Walgreenâs, and fast food/takeout options to fill in meal plan gaps.
Great weather for much of the school year, although it rains quite a bit.
The SCHC is strongly academically focused, as about 2/3 of the students reportedly go on to medical, law, or other grad programs. My kid, although very bright, is not a âlife of the mindâ kind of person. She enjoyed her classes, but she also wanted to have fun and make friends and travel (semester in Spain and Maymester Holocaust classes were high points), which she was able to do; so overall, she had a great experience. Academic support from SCHC was good. They provide a second advisor, in addition to the one in your major. Donât think my D had any issues getting into classes, meeting requirements, etc. Want to caution, though, that even though the U of SC Honors College does make a large school seem smaller, your S would still be on campus with 25,000 other students.
If your Son is interested in a Business/Math combo, he might look into the Finance Scholars program. Itâs a competitive entry program (after Year 2, I think) geared to students interested in Investment Banking.
Is travel a factor? One thing that I didnât think would matter, but did: Having the option to drive, even if makes for a long day, is nice. We are in PA so SC was a 10-11 hour drive. She flew a couple of times her first year; but then she made friends. One lived in MD and had a car, so D would ride most of the way back with her (and 2 other students) and then Iâd pick her up, so a less than 2 hour drive each way for me. Another friend lived in CT, so they would drive to our house, friend and other New England students would stay overnight with us, and then theyâd finish the drive the next day. D took a car her last two years (internships) so we never drove down again until graduation. She did fly home at Thanksgiving those years.
We all really, really liked Tulane; but even with generous merit, the cost differential was substantially more than youâre facing. Tulane would have been at least $50,000 more over four years, so the decision was easier for my D. I think if the costs were comparable, she would have picked Tulane.
New Orleans is such a cool city (Columbia is fun and pretty cheap, but I wouldnât call it cool). The Tulane campus is very pretty, in a beautiful neighborhood, and itâs a nice size (both in terms of acreage and number of students). Its academic reputation is excellent and seems to be improving every year. Since my D didnât end up there, I donât have any personal info to add. Honestly, he has two great choices and wonât go wrong with either one.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your insights, appreciate it so very much. Lord, it is such a hard choice for him, but Iâm comfortable either way and confident he will be happy. Thanks again!
Still waiting on departmental scholarships, does anyone know historically the amounts that have been awarded into the past?
Does anyone know when departmental scholarships are supposed to come out also?
Well my daughter made it official, choosing UofSC over 21 other schools she was admitted to, turning down admittances to Alabama Honors College, Arizona State Barrett Honors College, Clarkson Honors, Colorado School of Mines, Johns Hopkins, Miami Ohio (full tuition), Michigan State Honors, Northeastern, Pittsburgh Honors, Princeton, RPI, RIT, Rose Hulman (full ride), Stevens Institute of Technology, UCI, UCLA, UCSD, the other USC, Utah Honors, Vanderbilt, and Worcester Poly Institute.
She will be joining UofSC as a McNair Top Scholar recipient, and is looking forward to attending in the Fall!
@KevinFromOC It is a hard decision. Your daughter turned down so many top colleges. Wish her all the best.
@KevinFromOC Congrats to your daughter. Very impressive list of schools.Curious what drew to UofSC over all those other schools?
Moved to different forum
I just viewed the Honors College video and I actually thought it was strange for the student to describe it as âbeautifulâ because what I saw was run of the mill furniture and small roomsâŠnothing struck me as special about it so maybe the video didnât do it justice? Also, Iâm wondering about the level of religious tolerance at this school; two of the student narrators were wearing shiny, prominent crosses around their necks and they had deep Southern accents. Do kids who are not Christian feel like outsiders here?
I am just reading this now, almost a year later, as my daughter is accepted to UofSC (OOS) and it is her first choice school but she is waiting to hear about HC and merit, and I am SHOCKED to hear that UofSC did not offer your daughter more with her stats and with a son already there in the program. That is crazy. Did you ever learn more about the âwhyâ? That is a huge loss for UofSC- big mistake it seems.
Hi Proud VA Mom!!! Congratulations to your daughter for her acceptance, and I hope she gets into HC and gets lots of merit!! My son is now a Junior, absolutely loves the HC and is a McNair Scholar. I truly have nothing but rave reviews for U of SC and the honors college. It has been a truly fabulous experience. My daughter received her letter in Feb that she did not get into the Honors College, but she did still get instate tuition (we are out of state) and was invited to join Capstone. I think she had heard so much about the HC that she was just so disappointed. Plot twister - in late March (I think) - she got a letter offering her admission to the HC. I think spots opened up and they did end up offering it to her. Take home - it isnât over until it is over AND it couldnât hurt to e-mail Dean Lynn and let him know your child would love to be considered if spots open. (we did NOT do that) During that 4 to 6 weeks, she really looked at HC at Clemson, Georgia and NC State and UVA. She ended up choosing NC State because she wants to be a vet and they really have a pretty amazing animal science program. She wanted to work with a particular researcher there, wanted to join the turtle team, and ended up choosing NC State. (we are in-state). She is happy and thriving and it all worked out. I think the U of SC is such an amazing school, they offer wonderful merit, they have both HC and Capstone and there are just more kids than they have spots for. I am so excited for your daughter and cheering for her!!! Good luck!
