How competitive is acceptance to the Honors College compared to some of the Limited Enrollment Programs? I was accepted to UMD Letters & Sciences Honors, but my first choice major was Chemical Engineering. I'm just curious; if I'm good enough for the Honors College, why wasn't I good enough for ChemE? Is it that more competitive?

I think it’s harder to get into the limited enrollment majors than the honors college. As I understand it, if you don’t get directly admitted you can work hard and get into the limited enrollment programs, at least that is true in Biology. Not sure how hard ChemE is, but I know Biology isn’t too easy to get directly admitted into.

About 700 are admitted each year in the honors college (estimating here). Check the program size for your major and divide by 4 and you can guess the number of students that could be admitted. Some programs admit few freshmen. At any rate, check and see, but I think you’ll find yes, it is harder to get into the LEPs.

Thanks for the input! I suppose it doesn’t really matter now, though. I probably won’t be attending UMD.
