Lep?

Hi, I'm a bit confused about the program I was admitted into. I applied for the college of engineering but my acceptance letter said my first choice major was the limited enrollment program. Apparently I must complete the letters and sciences interim advising program first. What exactly is the limited enrollment program and how does it differ from direct acceptance into the college of engineering? Will I be able to take the same courses with the same professors as those who aren't in the program? Does it not look as good to employers? Very confused and would like some non-biased input from you guys first before I ask UMD.

Thanks a lot, Andrew

Same, same. I got in there, too.

Hey smewshie, I noticed you got accepted into letters and sciences as well. That just means we have to take some basic courses over again before we’re admitted to the LEP. Like in my case, it’s english, chem, calc II, physics. You can find what yours are by just going to the letters and sciences page for UMD.

What I really wonder is if LEP is a step down from a non LEP student. I’ll feel like I’m on academic probation, with them reviewing my progress all the time.

It’s just telling me the numbers for the courses but not actually what the courses are. Ugh, I guess I’ll look, but I’m not sure what I’m missing? If it’s one class, can I take the rest of the classes towards my major and declare next spring?

Click on psychology to see what you must take. I guess after completing these courses you then reapply to your major. Not so sure I’m going to go with this. I don’t want to take courses over again I’ve already taken without being guaranteed acceptance into my major…

“Not so sure I’m going to go with this. I don’t want to take courses over again I’ve already taken without being guaranteed acceptance into my major…”

Thanks. Yeah, I totally feel ya on that one. Or even this program in general. It says that you can only apply for your program once so if you apply to it and get rejected, what happens? Ugh. Where else did you apply/get accepted?

Yeah it seems I’d be wasting my time and money if I didn’t get accepted. I guess LEP is just a term used to designate the more competitive majors. I thought it was like a special program for risky students lol.

I got accepted into ohio state, texas a&m and nc state. I’m leaning towards osu and texas but a little more towards osu. I live in Chicago so u of i would’ve been nice but it’s a top notch engineering college and got rejected so I’ll be going out of state.

Have you got any other colleges you’re considering?

Those are good schools, congrats! My friend is going to OSU next year, he’s so excited and thinks it’s a great school. He’s going for film, though.

I’m still waiting to hear from the other colleges I applied to, but it might take longer than 30 days. I also applied to UVA, UChicago, and NYU. Since you live in Chicago, what do you think about UChicago?

Lol. Your in good shape dude. An LEP is just a popular and competitive major. There is no such thing as non-LEP engineering at Maryland. LEPs are harder to get into than non-LEP majors on average. Thats why they ask that you choose a second major when your applying to these competitive schools. Its still not clear whether you got into the engineering school or not based on your original post (it should be pretty clear in your acceptance letter) but if you did congrats. If you got accepted Letters and Sciences, its still ok. You can just transfer in once your there. You can still fulfill core requirements and some lower level engineering credits in the mean time in your first semesters.

smewshie, Thanks a lot, at least I’ve got somewhere to go and they are pretty good schools so I definitely can’t complain. I’m surprised the other schools haven’t got back to you. UMD was the last to respond to me. U of Chicago has a really good reputation, as I’m sure you know. It’s on the fringes of some sketchy neighborhoods but I think the campus is well insulated from any crime, although you do hear things from time to time. It’s not an engineer school so I don’t know a whole lot about it, but I visited an oriental museum they have there for a course I was taking and the campus looks very nice. It has an elite feel to it haha.

Tranmu, I just figured that out haha. Do you happen to know if our chances when applying are a bit improved once the IAP is completed? Will I just be tossed in to the application pool with other freshmen and transfer applicants without any extra consideration, or will completion of the IAP afford me a bit of an advantage over others?

well that was fast, I just heard back from UMD. They said that since engineering is not a competitive LEP (their words not mine), once I take the required courses and reach the required GPA, all I have to do is apply and my major will change. They made it sound like reaching the requirements is all that’s needed, and there’s no competition.

Thing is I’ve taken all the courses they require at my CC already so I don’t understand why they want me to retake them. Only thing I can imagine is that some don’t transfer. The early semesters on my transcript are pretty tainted too, so I don’t know how easy it’ll be to bring my GPA up to where it needs to be. I wish I was in MD so I could just go see an adviser.

I got in to letters and science too, though I applied for engineering. So do we need to fill in the application for LEP? The tab came out at the same time as the decision.

@IGoToSchool: I have to imagine so. I know the transfer into the program isn’t so challenging if your grades are where they need to be.

@IGoToSchool When did you submit your transfer applications if you got decisions back so quickly? I submitted 3 on March 1 and 1 on April 1. Hmm. And thanks for telling me about Chicago. Yeah, if by some chance I get in, I’ll definitely have to visit.

That’s good that engineering is a noncompetitive LEP. I feel like Psych is, but I’ll call tomorrow.
