Honors college

My D was admitted to the honors college at one of the UCs. @ucbalumnus or anyone else - can you tell me how big of a deal is this in the grand scheme of things - specifically, should being admitted to the honors college trump a regular acceptance at a more prestigious university. Expectation (or hope) is that she will go to grad school - does being in honors help with grad school admissions and / or placements. Seems like it will alleviate the other budget related concerns that we have in the UCs - through priority registration, guaranteed housing and such. Thanks in advance for your responses

It depends on the school. Some honors colleges at certain colleges/universities are very good. Which UC?

What kind of “grad school”?

PhD program admissions is about undergraduate research, faculty recommendations, and relevant courses and grades.

Medical and law school admissions have a lot to do with GPA and MCAT or LSAT scores.

Honors programs do vary considerably.

@jibler - UCI

You’d probably have to ask on the UCI forum whether the benefits listed are a significant improvement over what is normally available at UCI. E.g. guaranteed housing may be valuable if dorms are overflowing and off-campus housing is expensive or undesirable, but not much of a perk if dorm space is readily available anyway, and off-campus options are good and reasonably priced.

The honors program curriculum here:

can be compared with normal UCI general education requirements to see if it fits the student better.
