Honors Details?

I got into Michigan EA (whoo!) and was invited to/just admitted to LSA honors. Can anybody tell me a little about the program and what that entails? I'm concerned about it being a small program and theoretically restricting - but to be fair, all of my knowledge about it is from the site description.
Thanks!

Honestly, being in honors really is just a label to me. I live with other honors kids, so the “smart” kids, I suppose, though everyone here at UMich should be considered that. But it’s nice because everyone here cares about their work perhaps a degree higher than the average student. Honors is also very diverse geographically. Other than that, the only big thing is that you have to take Great Books I or Classic Civilization I your first semester here. There’s a requirement about taking a certain number of honors classes through your sophomore year but they don’t pay too much attention to it. It’s not restricting at all because you live in a dorm with non honors kids (my roommate isn’t in honors) and unless you decide to take honors-only classes, your classes will be with non honors students as well. Hell, being in honors isn’t even necessary to graduate with honors from the university. Any student can write an honors thesis, regardless of whether or not they are in the program. You’re given access to special honors advisors that you’ll never contact because they can’t help you as well as your concentration advisor can, and a study area in Mason Hall that you’ll never use. By and large, my experience and the experience of my honors friends has been just about no different than any non honors LSA student. I guess you can make it a different experience by opting to take honors-only classes and placing yourself in honors sections, or by taking advantage of the few and unnecessary resources honors gives you, but not many people I know have bothered. Don’t worry about restrictiveness, because it’s not nearly as restrictive as something such as the RC.

I say do it for the guaranteed central campus housing, if for nothing else. If you opt out of it and end up being tossed on North Campus, you’ll be kicking yourself.

P.S. Oh, and I almost forgot. There are honors events that are hosted for honors students. Usually these involve getting together with other honors students and going to a play, a sporting event, a lecture, a yoga class, or something like that. They’re usually hosted by the RA’s. They can be fun if you decide to attend them.

I would recommendi you search through the Michigan board on cc for threads on honors. There are several of them. Honors is smaller than LSA as a whole but it isn’t that small. It also isn’t severed from the rest of the school so it would not be restricting in the ssense that you may find the residential college to be.

entenduintransit’s advice is pretty reliable.
