I just received my letter informing me of my admission to the Skidmore Honors College and I am wondering about how many benefits the program actually has. The letter basically just said that I "have the opportunity" to do mandatory community service and take 3 honors classes during my entire career.

My D is in the honors program at Skidmore. It has been disappointing. We thought there would be perks too but there are none…no housing perks (they eliminated the housing perk five years ago), no registration perks (you register along with everyone else), definitely no monetary perks. I have called several times asking what the advantage is to being in the Honros Forum and the only answer I get is “it looks good on your transcript”. That’s if anyone actually sees it on the transcript! I have tried unsuccessfully to get them to add any perks for the honors program. My D summed it up: the honors program is a way for Skidmore to lure the better students in but there are no advantages to being in the honors program.
Skidmore College is a great liberal arts college but don’t go there thinking there will be any perks with their honors program.

Joining Honors Forum isn’t about the so-called perks, though there are informal advantages in terms of registering for courses, creating independents, getting funding for special projects, getting to know a range of professors well, etc. The true benefit is being part of a close-knit group of motivated and talented peers and faculty, intellectual soulmates if you will. And there are also leadership and co-curricular benefits that flow naturally from this community. So, if you’re looking for financial or housing perks, then Honors Forum may not be for you. But if you want to be part of an especially serious-minded, intellectual group of peers and faculty – and have these relationships be part of the foundation of your Skidmore experience – then you should consider it.
