Thank you @OSU1stChoice !
Honors dorms on many campuses can be like that. This was my daughter’s experience at another college and now my son is in Honors too. I guess pick your poison… it could be rough if it’s animal house too ?
Does anyone know if Honors takes up all of Taylor Tower, and does it house both the freshman and sophomore honors students for North Campus, or do the Sophomores live somewhere else with Honors?
@Mombean Sophomores aren’t required to live in honors housing. There are sophomores that live in Taylor who may or may not be honors. However, the majority of people in Taylor are honors freshmen.
Also, I lived in Taylor and ended up moving out. I was the only one who kept my door open or made any attempt to try to talk to the people living around me. Might have gotten unlucky with a bad floor, but I’ve talked to many other people who agree Taylor is generally a lot more antisocial than other dorms on campus. Definitely not much of a college experience living there.
@jpjfnj Thanks for letting me know. When my oldest started in Honors freshman weren’t required to live in the honors dorm either, so having to live in the honors dorm freshman year is new for my youngest. Glad to hear they don’t require it two years. So there is hope of getting a super double as a freshman in Taylor - i thought those would all go to the Honors sophomores. Sort of a shame they put their brightest students in one of the most cramped dorms on campus.
Does anyone know if there is a group chat or anything for honors students? My son would like to start looking for a possible roommate.
@Mombean I didn’t know of any freshmen who lived in doubles in Taylor. When you fill out the Housing Contract you can choose different rates for different rooms. Super doubles are the highest right I believe, but I’m not sure if they can guarantee freshmen these rooms since a lot of sophomores will get these rooms first. My guess is if you didn’t get one they would just charge you the normal rate and give you a quad in Taylor. And I agree, Taylor is one of the most cramped dorms on north, but the nicer ones usually go to sophomores or learning communities.
Current OSU student here. Never lived in Taylor but know a few people who did; I’ll try and answer the question asked in here to the best of my abilities.
- "Can I get a superdouble as a freshman?" While I can't definitively say "no", I would not count on being able to swing that. Those are rather coveted by sophomores in Honors and I'd be very surprised if they leave any open. Assume that, if you indicate Taylor/North Campus as your top preference, you'll be living in a quad.
- "Is Taylor social?" The boring, unhelpful, and correct answer is that the quality of social life varies far more by floor than by building. There are going to be some very loud floors in Taylor and some very quiet floors in Park-Stradley. However, if you're looking to maximize your chances of living on a social floor, Lincoln or Bradley will be better options.
- "Is Taylor Tower all honors students?" I believe so, yes. I don't know whether or not it'll be a mix of freshmen and sophomores or just freshmen though. I don't know if OSU forces honors sophomores to live in honors housing these days (they didn't even require freshmen to when I lived on campus). If honors sophomores aren't required to live in Lincoln/Bradley/Taylor, I wouldn't expect many to stick around as they're all considered to be pretty bad dorms (with the exception of the superdoubles).
