Honors Housing - Taylor vs Lincoln

Hi - my son and I got to see three of the Honor dorms yesterday. He will be in the College of Business, so Taylor Tower was the closest - but also the smallest by quite a bit. Lincoln just seemed so much nicer with separate space for sleeping, study and common areas - plus a bath in suite. And much closer to the RPAC. The third dorm was Bradley which seemed like a compromise between the two.

Our question is this - will he miss out on any Business type activities if he chooses to live at Lincoln? One of the guides said no, but another said that more Fisher Business students would pick Taylor. So, if you would please, give us some ideas, comments, and comparisons between Taylor and Lincoln. Thanks in advance.

No business activities are held in Taylor, so the biggest issue would be that he would have to walk a bit further to get the business school. More honors business majors live in Taylor mainly because that's where the kids in the Honors Business Living and Learning Community live.

Just to clarify...

Taylor Tower also has a private bath and separate sleeping/study space. The difference between the two is that Lincoln has a suite of 8-10 people (4 two or four person suites) that share a bathroom. Taylor has quads for freshmen; each quad consists of a study room with four desks, a bedroom with two bunk-beds, and a bathroom.

A Taylor quad is somewhat less space than a Lincoln double, but it is also cheaper. For first year students who want to get to know a lot of new friends, the space isn't really an issue. I lived in a Taylor quad my first year, and although I wouldn't want still to be living in one now (I'm a junior), I had a great experience freshman year, and I'm still living with the girls from that quad.

Taylor and Lincoln are both nice dorms. You can't go wrong either way, but I wouldn't discount Taylor due to a perceived lack of space. I've written other posts about the value of north campus quads, if you search under my previous posts.

Yeah the quads aren't as bad as they seem like they'll be. There's just a rough adjustment period.

Thanol and Ambi - thank you for your comments. I found your other comments Ambi and they were helpful.

Respectfully, I think the space comparison of Taylor and Lincoln is really no comparison at all.

Yes both have a bathroom within the suite, but Taylor has a single toilet, sink and shower for 4. Lincoln has four sinks, three toilets and two showers for 8 or 10. To me that's a big difference. Maybe it's a different perception among women and men - the thought of 4 men sharing a single bathroom isn't pretty. Another difference is that the bathroom in Lincoln is cleaned by the University, whereas the bathroom in Taylor is the responsibility of the residents.

The 8 or 10 in Lincoln are spread among four pods, each with a sleeping room and study room, and a common living room. It's not the Hyatt, but the difference in square footage per person is dramatic, in my opinion. I likened the feeling of Taylor to life in a submarine.

But I'm an old guy who needs space. Obviously the kids don't find Taylor to be a problem (or don't want to admit that it is), and in areas other than square footage, Taylor is arguably more appealing than Lincoln - a big cement beehive with very few windows. But if I was a student, Lincoln would win hands down based upon space alone.
