Hi, so I have been accepted into the Ohio State Honors Program and want to know a little more about one of the housing options Taylor Tower and it’s location in north campus. I’m most interested in the 2 person super double and would like to hear from anyone who has or knows someone who has lived there? How is North Campus viewed as, ie is it where people want to be or is there a different side that most people prefer. Also i’d be attending the fisher school of business so as far as classes how far is the walk to most of the classes both fisher and common core freshman classes?
Taylor is probably the better of the Honors housing options. The south campus option has no AC and is in an order building. The west campus option has AC but is west campus (which some view as too far away, but the setup of the suite is pretty cool as long as you get a double and not a quad). Taylor is north and closer to Fisher, but can be a long walk if you have classes on south (probably not - but still not TOO bad).
Each section of campus has its positives and negatives. South is more lively and has more dining options. West has their own traditions (in Morrill) and larger living areas. And you can, from some rooms, see into the stadium - or watch the MB practice.
North is “quieter”, has a smaller workout facility, and has a couple of dining options (one traditions, which can be pretty busy at times).
Bucks724, do most freshman get the housing option they apply for? Also i read that usually freshman end up with the quad in Taylor but is it still possible to get a double freshman year cause i couldnt imagine having 3 roommates haha, Also is it mainly engineering students or does it also have business students, since engineering students are known to have the hardest classwork ie ive heard they dont leave their dorm rooms.
It depends. You could end up with a double, triple or quad in Taylor. If you look at the 360 of the room, you can see how it is set up. Not quite as cramped in a quad as you would think. As for majors, it is mixed.
Honors students choose which area of campus is their first choice, so depending in when they get the contract in, what they select, and how the chips fall, it could be anyone.
Engineering and Business would find it closer to their major classes, but that’s not always an issue first year since GECs are all over the place!
If you don’t want a quad request south campus. Fewer quads on South.
Bucks724, i emailed the housing office and they said you can request your housing rate. Do you know if most people get the housing situation they requested? Also how is south campus without AC
First year, my daughter was assigned to a “new north” dorm. Second and third years, she has lived on South in a room with no AC. She’s happier with the atmosphere on South in her current building. There are a couple of days/weeks where it is H-O-T, but multiple fans help. And you’re really only in the room to sleep. It can be downright hot sometimes (this year more than last), but not 100% unlivable.
@bhs1978 is correct. Bradley has more doubles than any other room type. Doubles are Rate II in Bradley. Superdoubles are Rate I. Bradley has no AC.
On the flip side, Lincoln (West) has Rate I doubles with AC. For Taylor, you have AC and a Superdouble is Rate I, whereas a quad is IIA and a triple is II.
Take this with a grain of salt, but I would say you should preference Rate I FIRST, then North Campus second. That will leave you open the possibility of still being assigned a quad, but they go in order of your preferences to try to give you what you want. So they look at what you’ve selected and what’s left.
If you specify Rate II or III, you will NOT get a Rate I. But requesting a Rate I does not guarantee you won’t get a II or III. Does that make sense?
Yeah makes sense. When did you guys turn in your housing applications and when did you get to select and did you get your first choice?
I’m not sure if your question is directed at me, so I’ll answer. If you’re speaking to someone else, please disregard.
My daughter turned in her housing contract as soon as she got it (March?). She was admitted in the first wave (before Thanksgiving - 2016). However, she was in a Scholars group, so she was pre-assigned a residence hall based on that. For second year, she did not have to do reselection because she was assigned to a hall based on her employment. So for all three years living on campus, she did not have to make a choice.
@bucks724 or anyone else - do you know how the roommate situation works? I found a roommate and we both want to live in a double either Taylor (1st choice) or Lincoln (2nd). Do we have to put each others name and the same exact housing preferences in the contract? If we only request each other are we more likely to get a double?
Also does anyone know anything about the social situation at Taylor - I have heard from some that it is very anti-social which I don’t want. We don’t want parties all the time, but not having anything going on or no one willing to make new friends in the dorm sounds terrible.
If you mutually put each other, you will get each other. That doesn’t guarantee a double. Putting the same preferences in your housing contract will help, as they will give less than you ask for but not more (aka rate).
@graceanne77 My oldest daughter is a sophomore transfer student currently living in Taylor Tower this year. She’s in a super double, and her roommate is also a sophomore transfer. There are only handful of sophomores as this is a freshman honors dorm. She said it’s extremely social and everyone talks to each other! She said there’s always lots of commotion (in a good way) and everyone is very interactive. There are also lots of residence hall activities. Next weekend is a dorm trivia night for a chance to win airpods. A week or two ago was a game night where roommates could enter as teams. My D also said everyone constantly has their doors open and she just played guitar hero w a random guy because she could hear the game down the hall. Said people are always playing pool and foosball or studying in groups downstairs. I’m actually hoping my incoming freshman D gets assigned to Taylor this fall!
For what it’s worth- my son (OOS) is hoping to live in Taylor and wants a super double- but needs a roommate! He doesn’t know anyone as we are hundreds of miles away…but if any other cool guys are looking for a roomie too, send a message! Son is very athletic, very studious and very funny/likes to have fun!
Can someone explain what it is meant by a Super Double. I do not think a Quad would be a good situation for my son.
@MomMartha A super double is a room that can hold a quad but is used as a double. They are Rate 1 and more expensive roughly $500-1000 more a semester
@lowcountrychic I’d like to message you about this, my son has similar interests and might be interested. However, I’m unable to send private messages on cc (haven’t reached the minimum number of posts yet). If your son is still seeking a roommate send me a message. Thanks!
@disdusty, my son is still looking for a roommate. I am not sure how to send a private message on this site either?
@lowcountrychic - A lot of students are still waiting to hear about acceptance into Honors College. They said offers will be going out through the end of April. There is still plenty of time to lockin a roommate.
