So I just got a letter from UT that gives me a full ride from the engineering Dept. + Engineering Honors acceptance.

Problem: Because I was stupid, I didn't apply for housing, thinking that I wouldn't get any money from UT (and thus wouldn't go) so I didn't apply until today when I got the letter. Now I know that UT assigns dorm preferences based on the order in which you apply for housing, so my question is this: Will I have any chance at getting into Honors housing, considering my late application? Will I be able to get into any decent on-campus options? Should I consider off-campus options? I just need opinions from people who know more than I do. Thanks in advance for your replies :)

Congratulations!! I’m waiting to hear from the EHP as well, do you mind sharing your stats?

As for the housing, I know people pay their deposit as early as October and even applying January is considered late. It’s hard to say, but at the worst you will end up with supplemental housing. However, I don’t know how the honors housing works; I think they may be selective and thus make the application date less important, but I’d wait for someone with knowledge on the process to reply. There is still a chance you will end up with a normal room, it just depends on how many people have already applied. If you’re ok with the worst-case scenario of temporary supplemental housing, you should be fine.

I wouldn’t worry too much. I applied around this time, and I got housing. I didn’t get a room in the Quad though; I had to stick with Jester… If worse comes to worse, once you get your housing assignment, fill out a room transfer form. I was able to transfer out of Jester into the Quad second semester (there’s bound to be an upperclassmen who is taking a semester abroad for internship, what have you, etc that would lead to a free room).

xcloudy- what exactly is this dreaded supplemental housing you reference? O_o

As for my stats
800 CR
770 M
790 Writing

Salutatorian
National Merit Finalist
AP Scholar w/ Distinction
Debate Team President, 3 years state qualified
Civil Air Patrol, 2nd Lieutenant (Billy Mitchell Award) ← basically the equivalent of Eagle Scout

Those are the basics, probably what got me in. :)

1314eternal- Good to know! On their website they said basically that everyone who applies for housing will get some sort of on campus housing… how bad is Jester?

Congratulations and those are super stats! Do you mind indicating if you are out of state or in state?

You definitely should go ahead and pay the required deposits for admission and housing, but it is my understanding that if you can find a roommate ahead of time (obviously someone in the Honors program), if he or she has paid their $50 to lock in their spot in the housing lottery and you go in with them, you would have the advantage of their spot in the housing lottery. Just a thought. I suspect that you should be able to find someone to room with who may have paid their deposit earlier.

Again, congratulations on your acceptance and your scholarship. It’s great!

Jester isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be. It’s a very social dorm, so there’s bound to be a bit of noise at times in the halls, but Jester is in a prime location (dining facilities in same building, next to the main library and gym, etc). However, I have to say that I was never really comfortable in Jester though–from my experience, people like to steal things in Jester (if you leave your shampoo bottle in the shower, it will disappear)…

The Honors Quad is a bit removed from things, especially for business students, but for engineers, the Quad is geographically closer than Jester to the engineering region of the UT Campus. Also, from my experience, the people in the Quad don’t steal from each other (I am comfortable leaving my door unlocked or leaving wet shoes out in the hallway to dry)…

@Roofie- thank you! I’m in-state, got in through top 8%. And the idea of latching onto someone else who’s in Honors sounds good, I’ll probably try that.

@1314eternal- Yeah, I saw your post on the other thread. But if I keep my room locked, will it be safe? I mean, I know I still have to worry about my roommate being careless, but are the doorlocks good? And I know from reading these threads that Jester’s facilities aren’t the “nicest,” how bad are they really?

The hallways smell like sweat and are dimly lit. The room is dingy and dimly lit. Some of the wooden paneling on the closet might have some holes/scratches… The fixed back cushion on the couch bed things in the non-renovated rooms (renovated rooms have removable furniture) is pretty rough. Hot water disappears on occasion in the community showers, and 2 out of the 3 shower heads in my bathroom were extremely low (you would basically have to kneel if the “good” shower was taken). In the men’s room, some people really don’t care about cleanliness, so towards the end of the day there will be urine on the seat and on the floor in 3 out of the 4 stalls… Cleaning staff also comes at a most inopportune time (i.e., 9am), and when they come, you absolutely CANNOT go to the bathroom…
