GPA-wise... how much does taking HONORS classes/ being in the HONORS program help? esp. for UCB & UCLA.

If you're in Honors & could post stats... that'd be great.

I'll be applying for F'06. Currently a 3.34 due to a couple C's from taking classes while i was still in High School (3.7 since F'04). I'm hoping to have a 3.6 by the time I apply. Econ major (will apply to psych, too, if and when I get into to Cal).

Also, how important are EC's? I went to Cal Day and the L&S Admission table lady told me GPA is number one... they don't really care about EC's.

very true. though i competed in rhythmic gymnastics for a while (in california) and bumped into many lubas in that time. like 5 or 6. pretty crazy.

I hope Honors is a beg leg up, because it is the sole reason i am in the honors program; to increase my chances of transferring to usc. Im sure its like freshman admissions, where they view it as your challenging yourself and not taking the easy way. In my school, there is a big difference in the difficulty between honors classes and regular classes.

hey! are you thinking about going to foothill college? I come from their honors institute and they are GREAT!!! i love them..(wish i could get a 4 year degree here) and i believe being in it is one major reason thats gotten me into UCLA and Cal. It give you a 95% chance of getting you into UCLA if you complete all the TAP requirements (with decent grades) and I'm sure its reeks major advantages for getting into Cal or maybe even stanford (which is only 2 miles away!)...The staff is just so supportive, and genuinely ethusiastic in everything they do for you...

as far as the rigor of these honors courses, depends what you take. THere is a music honors course which i havent taken myself, but how hard could that possibly be? The linguistic courses are easy...seminars are fun. really, i have taken 6 courses total, and its hard to say that i've seen much difference, rigor-wise between honors and regular. I have a great time in these courses though because the students are much more engaged in the curriculum. I would give Honors at Foothill the highest recomendation!...it practically saved me from the pre-acceptance letter buggssss because this community college is one of the best in northern california and has great relations with great universities!! (we even have a TAA with Cornell!!!!! why???)....

Also, im not sure if you are, but ive glossed through this thread...and you might or might not have said you were an international student. Dont make that an overbearing factor to NOT Join the Honors Institute. Many of the honors students at foothill are from different parts of the world..and they do just as well as everyone else.

Major- Comm studies
gpa- 3.84
70something uc units and igetc certified; pre-reqs all completed with As

Accepted into Ucla, Ucsd, Ucsb

Honors programs at each CC vary significantly. The courses at my school were generally not too difficult and I always felt that the honors staff and professors did everything in their power to help me both in my CC education and in helping me transition to a UC. It's generally been a really rewarding experience for me and it definitely helped me stay focused in an environment where that's not always super easy. I always suggest that people at least check out their school's honors programs. I've heard different responses from people at different schools.

Oh, and the 95% admission for UCLA is correct. At my school, almost everyone in TAP has been admitted to UCLA for the major of their choice (one was a fluke and the other applied but was completely unprepared). This is compared to about a 40% chance of admission for a non-TAP transfer student.
