It seems like they do not offer Honors in the Major for undegrads who would like to work on a thesis.
Do they offer anything to non-Honors students that would help them for Graduate School? FSU has Honors in the Major and that is the only thing keeping me here in Tally at the moment as I do not like it at FSU at all.

I completed my undergraduate studies at USF last May; I am a graduate student at USF now. My graduate program was very competitive for admission. I wasn’t in USF’s Honors College. My undergraduate GPA was approx 3.50 and my GRE scores were just average. What I think helped me probably more than anything else in gaining admission to graduate school was having good recommendations from my undergraduate professors at USF.

To get favorable recommendations from professors means they have to know you and at least be able to “put a face” to your name. I was active in many programs and clubs associated with my majors, serving as an active officer and volunteer. Most clubs had professors as advisors, so I knew the professors that way. Too, I did undergraduate research with a professor as a mentor, she helped get me into graduate school too. My undergraduate program allowed the opportunity to do a thesis under the mentorship of a professor–I didn’t particpate in that because of scheduling conflicts–but it was available. Each college and program at USF has opportunities to do “extra” work like research and doing a thesis. Available faculty and graduate students to serve as mentors varies from one program to another so if you are interested in these programs for research, etc., contact the program to see what they can offer you.

USF does encourage undergraduate research even for those not in the Honors College. [Office for Undergraduate Research | USF Tampa Libraries](http://lib.usf.edu/undergraduate-research/)

What I’m getting at is students who are not in the Honors College can get into graduate school. I think a formula that will work at USF or at most any other college is: Get good grades, have a good attitude, prepare for GRE exams, be well rounded and participate in school extra curricula, and get on the good side of professors who can give you favorable recommendations for admission to grad school. It is competitive getting into grad school, but it can be done.

Awesome! Thanks for the info super helpful.
I made my decision and sent in transcripts and updated my application because FSU is not a right fit for me and for what I want to do.
I thought it would be the perfect place but since being here nothing has been going right and living on campus is getting stressful/depressing as well as costly.
I applied last year to USF as a CC transfer and was accepted for Fall '12. I chose FSU because I got it for Summer and really liked my visit here in Tally.
Anyway should I worry about not getting accepted for Spring '13 though?

I really have no idea about your chances of admission for spring. USF will have your FSU grades from summer and they might want to see your final grades for this fall term. Different USF colleges have different transfer entrance criteria. Make sure to keep your grades up. If you haven’t already, phone USF and ask for timetable for admission decision and prospects for admission.

Unless you are going to live at home while attending USF, your expenses will be about the same as attending FSU. My sister is an undergrad student at FSU and loves it; she didn’t want to attend the same school I did I guess so she could be more independent with me not around her!

Good luck!

I live on campus here and things are a little more expensive here in general bc it’s a college town. I did have Pell Grant so that helped a lot but still spending a lot on housing. Also it’s impossible to get a job here bc many places refuse to pay me more than minimum wage and are afraid to take me on bc I live on campus so they assume I’ll leave every major break. The city is small, there is barely any diversity, there is nothing to do here and not that many options for affordable food.
At USF I’ll be at home so that will save me a lot and I will get my job back where I was paid well above minimum wage and allow for a flexible schedule. Plus more things to do here in Tampa besides clubbing and WAY better museums and opportunities.
As my Art History professor put it, “Tallahassee is a cultural wasteland…”

T-Pain is from Tallahassee…how much more culture does Tallahassee need!

I hope everything works out for the best for you. If you are really serious about getting into USF, I’d pull out the ‘financial hardship’ card with USF admissions and more or less beg them to let you in because you can’t afford to continue to stay in college if you have to stay at FSU. Again, best of luck!

haha yeah

I didn’t have to redo my application, they just told me to send in a form checking off a box stating term I originally applied for and the term I want to change it to and then send my FSU and CC transcript.

My FSU GPA by the end of this term should be a 3.5 (including summer grades) or a little higher so hopefully they’ll let me in b/c I didn’t have a steller GPA at HCC and they accepted me then.

Thank you :)
