Honors Math, worth it if it's a struggle?

Thanks so much, @momofsenior1 . I agree with you, each time I think to drop her down, she fights me on it, and then even though I know it may be hurting her GPA, and perhaps her chances at admissions somewhere, I also feel that she is really learning something tangible that grades don’t necessarily reflect.

Sometimes, the parent does know better, and in this situation, it really sounds like the class isn’t a good fit. There’s a difference that most teens don’t get, between perseverance and obstination.
What you DO need to check is what class she’d be placed in: Regular Algebra2? (Sounds like she covered geometry last year and part this year, so it probably covers what the Regular Geometry class does in one year).
If she’s in Algebra2 this year, she can take regular precalculus as a junior, and see if she can take AP Stats or regular stats as a senior.
A difference between her current class and Algebra2 is that she would likely have a chance to retake the test to show her understanding of her mistakes, which is the best way to learn.

BTW, covering Algebra1+Geometry, then Geometry+ALgebra2, is done in many European countries as the “academic” 8th+9th grade.

So did she change courses?
Agree with MYOS about “what” lesson you’re letting her learn. Sometimes, perseverance is futile and leaves a féeling of incompetence or being lesser. Running against an obvious fierce wind.

I let one of mine drop back in a stem course. She went from frustration to learning mastery.

@HankCT: any update?

No updates yet. We had a snowstorm he day of parent teacher conferences so they reschedule for some time week after thanksgiving

In the interim she took a test and got an 86 so she is back feeling good again, but it oscillates from 65 to 86.

To answer the question asked before, if she left this honors Geometry/Alg2 now as a sophomore mid year she would drop down to Geometry and spend the second half of the year covering the same stuff she learned in the first half of this year.

Is there a way you could convince her GC to let her start in algebra2 regular in the second semester? It’d be a compromise.
