Honors Medical Scholars?

How much of a chance do I really have at getting into the Medical Scholars program, or even the honors program?

Total of 11 AP's for high school. (3's, 4's, and 5's)
- All A's and 2 B's total. (one was a high school course offered in eighth grade and one 10th grade)
- I've maintained a rigorous academic schedule since sophomore year, but freshman year contained regular classes.
- 4.0 GPA unweighted, 4.7 weighted, top 3% of my class, will graduate summa *** laude
- ACT (31), SAT (1800), will take SAT Subject tests for American history and Chemistry (650+ at least)
- AP Scholar
- Laureate graduation award, and laureate presentation with a 5,000 page paper concerning LGBT marriage with a powerpoint (This is prestigious in my area).
- Academic Achievement awards (3 years so far), Drama department award, and various drama awards.
- President of the Drama Club, president of the Gay/Straight Alliance, school sponsored president of the International Thespian Society, historian of the Glee Club, Academic Team competitor, Key Club, and National Honor Society.
- I've volunteered over 300 hours with a kid's drama camp, at the hospital, library, and other areas as well.
- I'm a male 1st generation American with family from Cuba, and the 1st to go away to college.

Unrelated note: Your community service and service to LGBT community looks phenomenal!

A few stipulations: How do you have a 4.0 unweighted GPA if you received two “B’s?”
SAT subject tests are irrelevant
How many hours have you devoted specifically to medically related community service, as the application predominantly emphasizes medically related activities (research, ECs, essay question on your goals in medicine, etc.)?
Be sure to emphasize your first generation status
Chances of getting into honors: 100% - your ACT meets the minimum test score requirement and your GPA certainly meets the minimum GPA requirement to be accepted into FSU honors. They really only look to see if you meet the minimum requirement to get into honors.

Chances of getting into FSU medical scholars: Hard to say (though if you follow my advice below i guarantee you your chances will be significantly higher), though i would like to emphasize that the program is EXTREMELY competitive. I can pretty much only give you the stats I had (I got rejected) to give you an idea of how competitive admissions are. I had a 4.0 UW, 2040 SAT, 8 AP’s (all 5s), 1 DE (calc 1), and the rest honors except for Spanish, and was a three year graduate. Both my parents were first generation Russian so i emphasized my first generation status as well as LGBT status. I was in GSA, pres of the chess club, and corresponding secretary as well as precalculus coach for Mu Alpha Theta. I volunteered 105 hours in a nursing home and 120 hours tutoring mathematics.

Advice: Despite what medical specialty you would like to get into say that you want to go into general medicine and that you would like to work in a rural area, as these are the type of candidates they are really looking for. This is the main reason i got rejected (I found out by calling one of the ladies working on the adcom), as I stated I wanted to work in a metropolitan area (strike 1) and planned on becoming a neuroradiologist (strike 2). I would also connect your work in drama with the communication and social aspects of the medical profession.

I received the two B’s my freshman and 8th grade year, so I raised my unweighted to a 4.0 at the end of my junior year.
Thank you so much on your advice! I honestly cannot express my gratitude in words right now. lol. I’m really sorry that you weren’t put into the program, but hey, I’m sure you’ll get your way into the medical field some other way. :)

You qualfy for the Honors program at FSU, sorry I have no idea about the Medical Scholars.
I agree with abbeyroad55343. If those were high school courses I don’t see how it is mathematically possible to ever have a 4.0 unweighted GPA once you have even one B on your transcript, unless you are rounding up. But technically that’s not a 4.0.
Just saying.

Our school recalculates your GPA every year, so the previous grades do not affect my junior year GPA.

It will affect your overall GPA as far as FSU grading goes.
