Honors Program in Med (HPME)

I was checking out a bunch of accelerated med programs and i wonder if any of u guys have any advice about northwestern's accelerated program. Is it extremely selective? cuz like UCLA only selects 12 ppl in theirs. no chance there. cuz id really like the garuntee of an accelerated program cuz id hate to have to study the MCATS and everything only to be rejected all med schools. the safety of an accelerated program is really assuring. any input would be greatly appreciated.

~40 selected.

you have to apply to get the application. sats should be 1500+ to apply for application.

in other words, pretty selective..

The top BS/MD programs are insane. To even get an interview you need alot more than just scores, I tried applying to a bunch of BS/MD programs when I was a senior in high school with a 1530 SAT, 35 ACT, 750-800 on 3 sat II's and out of 10 programs that I applied to I got interviews at 4, and acceptances at 2, the interviews were at Jefferson, Drexel, BU, and IIT. My e/c's were alright, captain of academic team, captain of math team, pres of latin club, lots of hours volunteering in ER, founded chess club, national honor society, youth leadership columbus, soccer team, mock trial w/region award, leads in 2 spring musicals and part of one-act competition team. I didn't get an interview to HPME with that, my friend a year ahead of me got into HPME though with 1590 and again insane e/cs, I think research helps alot, he'd done alot of that, and for hpme they probably want alot more science and medical-related stuff not just volunteering, my e/cs were more spread out which was probably what hurt me. The essays are prob really important too, those probably need to be well above the competition for interview.

i agree with ndhawk. research is very important. to apply for medical school, it's crucial that you have a research background, so it's no surprise that a direct med program would look for that as well.

last year we only had one girl get into hpme, but the year before that, we had like 4 or 5 i think.

if you want more info, we HPME admits this year have been talking with each other and other potential admits on this thread:

Oh well i guess im not applying to HPME after all...

i wouldn't worry about research experience too much. i'm an incoming hpme freshman and i had zero research exposure. i did have a lot of involvement in medical situations (volunteering in ER, summer programs involving medical fields, shadowing doctors, etc). i think basically you need to show that you are dedicated to medicine.

i'm an incoming HPME freshman, and i too have done no research. The applications to NU and HPME are seperate so it doesn't hurt to apply!

no research here either...

may i ask what you did in research's stead?

founded and ran a tutoring program, student council prez, national champ at BPA competitions, lots of piano, got good grades, stuff like that

volunteered in hospital, lots of ECs

I'm an incoming HPME freshman as well. No med research. I did lots of tutoring for inner city youth. Don't worry about SATs, if u're 1350+ you at least have a chance.

Luknot, I am a high school senior who's very interested in doing the HPME program. My SAT scores, however, are not as impressive as I would hope. If you don't mind me asking, can I please know your score?

I dont think it will be relevant as u must take the new SAT, but i'll PM u my score.
